Describe the Calzone.

A calzone is a folded pizza baked in the oven with sealed borders to keep everything within!

A calzone can contain anything that is used on pizza! One-half of the pizza dough in the shape of a circle is covered with the pizza toppings.

The dough is then baked in the oven after being folded over, crimped, and covered with either an egg wash or a brush of olive oil.

Calzone vs. Stromboli

Although a typical calzone frequently contains ricotta, strombolis and calzones both share the same dough and even ingredients.

The way they are sealed is the key distinction. A calzone is crimped and sealed, and a stromboli is wrapped up. While a calzone is typically hand-held or single-serving, a Stromboli is cut into slices after baking.

Whichever you choose, they both taste fantastic!

Advice & Alternatives

Dough Use either store-bought or canned pizza dough. With this recipe, either works nicely.

Many neighborhood pizzerias (or Italian markets) sell freshly prepared dough that can be frozen. I always purchase a few packages to keep on hand.

Fillings Pizza sauce is used in little amounts, and extra is always provided for dipping. There are no restrictions on fills. Make sure your meats are cooked and cook and/or fully drain any watery vegetables (such as mushrooms or pineapple).

Cheese Mozzarella adds the ideal flavor, as does a little parmesan if you prefer. Ricotta is a classic and delectable addition (but not something I usually have on hand). Use any substitutes you have on hand.

Because the fillings will be hot, make sure to give the calzones some time to cool. The cheese won’t become too runny if it is given a few minutes to rest.

Creating a Calzone

Calzones are as simple to make as folding a pizza in half!

  1. Roll the pre-made pizza dough into a circle after dividing it into equal portions.
  2. The ingredients should be spread over one-half of the dough. The edges are folded and crimped.
  3. Cut air vents, oil them, and bake them (per the recipe below).

Warm calzones should be served with marinara dipping sauce.

Leftovers

To preserve leftovers for up to 3 days, place them in an airtight container and store them in the refrigerator.

Put the calzones in a zipped bag and mark the date on it before freezing. They ought to remain fresh for around a month.

  1. Put parchment paper on a large sheet pan and preheat the oven to 425°F.
  2. Roll each dough ball into a 1/4-inch-thick circle after dividing the pizza dough into 4 equal pieces.
  3. Add equal amounts of sauce, yellow onion, green bell pepper, and sliced pepperoni to each half of the dough circle. To be able to crimp the calzone shut, make sure to leave some space around the edges.
  4. Shredded cheese is distributed equally among the toppings. Then fold and crimp the edges of the remaining dough over the toppings.
  5. Place the calzone on the preheated baking sheet after making a few air vents on the top.
  6. When the dough is completely cooked and the calzone is golden brown, bake for about 15 minutes, brushing with olive oil halfway through.
  7. Pizza sauce should be warmed before serving.

Notes

  • Use either store-bought or handmade pizza dough.
  • Look for fresh homemade dough at your neighborhood pizzerias (or Italian grocery) and keep some extra in the freezer.
  • Make sure all meats are cooked and cook and/or well drain any watery vegetables (such as mushrooms or pineapple). Ricotta can be added in little amounts to create a classic calzone.
  • Because the fillings will be hot, make sure to give the calzones some time to cool. The cheese won’t run out if you take a few minutes to rest.
