Basted vs. Poached Eggs
What distinguishes basting from poaching?
In a covered pan with boiling water, occasionally with vinegar added, poached eggs are cooked. A poached egg will have a runny yolk and a firm white.
A tiny amount of water is added to the pan after the basted egg has cooked in a small bit of oil or butter.
The water under the closed lid evaporates, steaming the eggs. Without taking any additional procedures, it’s almost a foolproof method to boil eggs!
- Before pouring water into the pan, additional seasonings can be put on the eggs.
- Add a dash of Adobo Seasoning, Everything Bagel Seasoning, or homemade seasoning salt to finish.

- 1 tablespoon butter
- 4 eggs
- salt & pepper
- Melt butter in a 10″ nonstick skillet over medium heat.
- Once the butter has melted, crack each egg into the skillet one at a time.
- Allow cooking for about 2 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the whites are set.
- The egg whites can have water on them; just add 2 tablespoons of water to the skillet and cover it.
- Cook the eggs for another 3 to 4 minutes, or until the whites are set but the yolks are still runny.
- To avoid overcooking the eggs, remove them from the pan right away.
- Add salt and pepper to taste.
