Discover the secret to always making brown rice flawless!

It is consistently frothy and light when prepared using this simple stovetop method, making it ideal for stir-fries, bowls, and more.

The days when I have a large container of cooked brown rice in the refrigerator are my favorites. It’s a great foundation for curries, stir-fries, fried rice, and other dishes, and its earthy, nutty flavor is even delectable on its own. I occasionally add a bit of salt and an egg on top and label it breakfast.

Furthermore, in addition to being delicious, it is also healthy. In addition to other minerals, they are a rich source of fiber.

Since putting together a grain bowl for lunch or dinner only takes a few minutes when I have the ingredients on hand, I find that I don’t need to go for snacks or sweets as often.

Although it’s rumored to be difficult, I’m here to assure you that cooking brown rice on the stove is rather easy.

It is cooked using this simple, reliable approach and always turns out perfectly. So let’s get cooking and bid farewell to mushy rice! All you need is water, rice, olive oil, and a pot.

BROWN RICE PREPARATION

Any kind of brown rice, as long as it’s neither instant nor quick-cooking, will cook using this simple approach.

Since some items are more processed than regular brown rice, different cooking times apply. Follow these easy steps when you’re prepared to cook:

  • Rinse the rice initially. For the sake of removing extra starches from the outside of the rice, this step is crucial. The rice will clump and get gummy while it cooks if they are not removed by washing. Please don’t omit this step if you want fluffy brown rice! My preference is to rinse mine in a fine mesh strainer placed over a sizable bowl until the water in the bowl is clear.
  • Measure the necessary water-to-rice ratio after that. Each cup of rice gets two glasses of water. A teaspoon of extra-virgin olive oil should be added to the medium pot along with the water and rice.
  • Cooking is the next step. To cook the rice until it is soft and has absorbed the water, bring the water to a boil, lower the heat, cover the pan, and simmer for about 45 minutes.
  • Put an end to the heat. Before removing the lid and fluffing with a fork, allow the pot to sit, covered, for 10 minutes.

COOKING TECHNIQUES FOR BROWN RICE

There are countless uses for cooked rice once you have it on hand. You can stir-fry it, serve it alongside curries or chana masala, or use it in place of white rice in my recipe for cilantro lime rice.

To give texture to vegan meatballs and veggie burgers, I also use short-grain brown rice.

Because it has a stickier texture than long-grain brown rice, it is essential for producing extra-hearty patties that maintain their shape when cooked in the oven, on the stove, or the grill.

I use it as a base for nutritious grain bowls the most frequently though. You can use it as a starting point for a straightforward grain bowl without a recipe, even though I specifically ask for it in this buddha bowl, this adzuki bean bowl, and this mango ginger rice bowl.

To transform plain rice into a great dinner, simply add one (or more) of these items from each category:

  • the protein! My preferred foods include roasted chickpeas, baked tofu, tempeh, lentils, and tempeh.
  • an edible plant! Roasted tomatoes, butternut squash, cauliflower, broccoli, and Brussels sprouts would all go well with it.
  • one sauce! Try cilantro lime dressing, pesto, tzatziki, chipotle sauce, peanut sauce, tahini sauce, and cilantro dressing.

If you try any variations, please let me know!

  2. After removing it from the heat, leave it covered for an additional 10 minutes. With a fork, fluff.

NOTES

Using the brown rice setting on a rice cooker also results in success with this rice-to-water ratio. Leave out the olive oil if you’re cooking your rice in a rice cooker.
