It’s officially overnight oats season in my house now that the weather is starting to warm up outdoors!

When the weather becomes warmer, I move from warm oatmeal dishes to chilled overnight oats jars in the morning. Overnight oats are simple to prepare and come in a variety of flavors.

I prepared these Apple Pie Overnight Oats this week, which have no extra sugar but miraculously taste like an apple pie. Please, yes!

WHAT ARE OVERNIGHT OATS?

Overnight oats are the perfect breakfast meal prep to make mornings quick and easy. They’re basically oats that have been softened by soaking for hours in a liquid rather than being briefly boiled in it.

When you add all kinds of wonderful extra ingredients, they will soak up all of the flavors as well! Isn’t it fantastic? It’s even better when they’re apple pie flavored and don’t require any additional sugar to be delicious. #winning

DO YOU PREFER HOT OR COLD OVERNIGHT OATS?

Overnight oats can be eaten hot or cold. I like overnight oats cold in the summer, but if you like a warmer breakfast, simply microwave the oats for 60-90 seconds until heated thoroughly. In any case, they’re fantastic!

WHERE SHOULD I GET MY OATS?

For overnight oats, I prefer old-fashioned rolled oats since they soften overnight but retain a lot of texture. Quick or instant oats soften fast as well, but they have a much smoother texture and provide a more mushy product.

Steel-cut oats can be used in a variation of overnight oats, but they require more liquid and a longer soaking period, therefore they cannot be substituted in the recipe below.

WHAT TYPE OF CONTAINERS SHOULD I PUT MY FOOD IN?

For overnight oats, you can use any form of resealable container. If you’re on a budget, the blue-top Ziploc containers are ideal, but mason jars or glass meal prep containers also work well.

You’ll need a container that holds 1-1.5 cups for the recipe below. 8 oz. jars were utilized.

WHICH DRIED FRUIT SHOULD I USE?

You have a few alternatives here, all of which allow you to use the most economical or available ingredient. I used dried cranberries today because that’s what I had on hand, but raisins, dried currants, or chopped dried dates can also be used.
