This recipe of Lasagna requires a few stages, but it’s simple to create and has a ton of flavor. The preparation of this meal can be done in advance, and it freezes nicely both before and after baking.

This dish is very simple and uses stuff you already have on hand. This simple lasagna recipe only calls for one pan, one bowl, and a 9×13 baking dish.

A brief description of the layers:

Cheese Component In a bowl, combine the ricotta, cheeses, and an egg as directed in the recipe below, and put aside. Not ricotta? There is no issue; cottage cheese works perfectly in this recipe!

Food Sauce On the stovetop, brown the beef, onion, and garlic. Add the tomato paste and spaghetti sauce, then cook for a short while.
Layer one another Noodles should be layered with the meat sauce and cheese mixture, then baked until bubbling.

The layout of a Lasagna

  1. In a 9×13 pan, spread roughly a cup of meat sauce. Add some noodles on top.
  2. Add part of the cheese mixture on top of the noodles.
  3. The layers should be repeated, with a layer of noodles and sauce at the bottom.
  4. Bake while covered with foil.
  5. Remove the foil, sprinkle mozzarella and parmesan over top, and bake for an additional 15 minutes.

Duration of baking

The overall baking time for the lasagna in this recipe is roughly an hour. You must bake it twice to achieve the ideal browned cheese topping.

  • To keep the moisture in, layer and securely wrap the food in foil.
  • Once cooked, take the foil off, sprinkle cheese on top, and put the dish back in the oven for a further 15 minutes, or until the cheese is browned and the sauce is bubbling.

Plan ahead

Before baking, lasagna can be made ahead of time and stored in the refrigerator for up to 2 days. Before or after baking, it can also be frozen.

One of the best dishes to prepare ahead of time and freeze is lasagna. Increase or treble the recipe, and save some for later by freezing. Bake as recommended after defrosting in the refrigerator overnight.

Reheating lasagna

Ingredients for Lasagna

  • 12 lasagna noodles uncooked
  • 4 cups mozzarella cheese shredded and divided
  • ½ cup parmesan cheese shredded and divided

Tomato sauce

  • ½ pound lean ground beef
  • ½ pound Italian sausage
  • 1 onion diced
  • 2 cloves garlic minced
  • 36 ounces pasta sauce *see note
  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste
  • 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning

Cheese mixture

  • 2 cups ricotta cheese
  • ¼ cup fresh parsley chopped
  • 1 egg beaten

Instructions

  1. 350°F oven temperature. Follow the directions on the package to prepare pasta al dente. Place aside after rinsing under cold water.
  2. Over medium-high heat, brown the meat, sausage, onion, and garlic until no pink is visible. Remove any fat.
  3. Add the tomato paste, spaghetti sauce, and Italian seasoning. 5 minutes of simmering
  4. Combine 1 1/2 cups mozzarella, 1/4 cup parmesan, ricotta, parsley, and egg to make the cheese mixture.
  5. Into a 9×13 pan, pour 1 cup of beef sauce.
  6. Add three lasagna noodles on top. Add 1 cup of meat sauce and a third of the cheese mixture to the layer.
  7. Repeat two more times.
  8. Finish by adding three noodles and the last of the sauce.
  9. Foiled-covered, bake for 45 minutes.
  10. Remove the cover, top with the remaining cheese (2 12 cups mozzarella and 14 cup parmesan), and bake for a further 15 minutes, or until bubbling and golden. If preferred, broil for 2 to 3 minutes.
  11. Before cutting, take a 10-15 minute break.

Notes

  • *Note regarding the sauce: This recipe calls for 1 cup of meat sauce for each layer. Increase the pasta sauce to 48 ounces if you prefer extra sauce in your lasagna.
  • Use fresh lasagna sheets from the deli section to save time and omit the boiling process! There is no need to boil fresh lasagna first.
  • After removing the lasagna from the oven, allow it to sit/rest for at least 15 minutes (even 30-45 minutes is fine). As a result, it won’t get runny and will maintain its shape when cut.
  • When reheating, no resting is necessary.
    Cottage cheese can be used in place of ricotta cheese.
  • If necessary, substitute ground beef (or even ground turkey) for the sausage.
