An All-Purpose Seasoning (Not Just for Tacos)!

  • Store-bought seasoning is convenient and delicious, but it can include a lot of additives, be overly salty, and lack the flavor of homemade taco mix.
  • It is simple to adapt it to your family’s preferences. If you’d like, cut the salt back or crank up the heat.
  • This easy-to-follow recipe for homemade taco seasoning can be doubled or tripled.

The components of Taco Seasoning

So what exactly does taco seasoning contain? It’s a mixture of spices, most of which are probably already in your cabinet.

The majority of the ingredient, chili powder, adds a southwestern flavor. It works well in mixtures as well as soups and, of course, chili recipes.

While onion powder and garlic powder serve as the recipe’s aromatics, ground cumin provides a toasty, slightly nutty flavor. Cayenne pepper adds heat in a pinch.

This taco spice has dried oregano, salt, and black pepper. If I have any on hand, I will occasionally add a small amount of sweet or smoked paprika (1/2 teaspoon).

Variations

  • Depending on your dietary requirements, add more or less salt.
  • Remove the cayenne and/or chili flakes from the taco seasoning recipe to make it mild.
  • If you like it hot, raise the cayenne or add additional dried chili peppers.

Given that it’s made of spices, it inherently lacks gluten (just make sure your chili powder and all spices are GF).

How much seasoning to use on tacos?

After making it, you won’t want to use store-bought taco seasoning again.

  1. One packet of taco spice is equivalent to two tablespoons of homemade seasoning.
  2. For every pound of ground beef, use 2 tablespoons of your homemade taco seasoning. Stir in 1/2 cup of water along with the spices.
  3. Optional: While the meat is browning, add 1/2 of a diced onion. Once browned, add a spoonful of tomato paste or, if you like, some chopped tomatoes.

Alternative Uses for Taco Seasoning Mix

This spice mixture can be used in a variety of various recipes besides just Mexican-inspired ones (like tacos).

Skip the seasoning packet and prepare your own whether you’re making fajitas on Friday or chicken tacos throughout the workweek.

On any of the following, use it:

  • 1 pound of ground meat, such as turkey, chicken, or beef
  • Cutlets of pork or chicken. Before grilling, try it on shrimp.
  • Add it to the sautéed vegetables.
  • To creamy pasta sauces, add them.
  • For a tasty treat, season popcorn with it!

I adore making slow-cooked chicken tacos and Dorito Taco Salad with this recipe.

Storage

The shelf life of homemade taco seasoning is six months if it is kept in a cool, dry area like your spice cabinet! I keep my spices in adorable little jars from Amazon, but you could also use a small mason jar or go to the dollar shop.

To have some taco mix on hand whenever I need it, I normally make a quadruple batch.
