How are eggs basted?

Similar to a fried egg, a basted egg has a small amount of water added to help steam the tops.

  • Because it cooks the eggs to a medium set (also known as “sunny side up”), we adore this dish.
  • Three basic ingredients that you most likely already have used in this recipe.
  • They can be made very quickly! In less than 10 minutes, you can eat these eggs.

Basted vs. Poached Eggs

What distinguishes basting from poaching?

In a covered pan with boiling water, occasionally with vinegar added, poached eggs are cooked. A poached egg will have a runny yolk and a firm white.

A tiny amount of water is added to the pan after the basted egg has cooked in a small bit of oil or butter.

The water under the closed lid evaporates, steaming the eggs. Without taking any additional procedures, it’s an almost foolproof method to boil eggs!

Variations

  • Before pouring water into the pan, additional seasonings can be put on the eggs.
  • Add a dash of Adobo Seasoning, Everything Bagel Seasoning, or homemade seasoning salt to finish.
  • The eggs can be spiced up even more by adding a few drops of chili sauce!

Creating Basted Eggs

Making handmade, restaurant-style basted eggs is quite simple.

  1. Gently crack eggs into the pan as the butter melts.
  2. Per the recipe below, cook for a few minutes uncovered.
  3. When the whites are set but the yolks are still soft, add water, cover the pan, and simmer for another few minutes.

Serving Ideas for Basted Eggs

With buttered toast, every flavor of the egg is delicious, but we enjoy topping basted eggs with potato pancakes, sweet potato hash, or a side of homemade breakfast sausage.

Eggs Benedict can be made with basted eggs instead of poached ones.
