Biography

77 titles for world championships

At the age of 4, Sage Northcutt started taking martial arts lessons. Since then, the fighter says he has engaged in over 3000 competitive fights.

Since he started competing, Mark Northcutt, Sage’s father, has served as both his primary coach and nutritionist. Sage began his martial arts career after spending a lot of time with his sister and observing the enjoyment she was getting.

When Sage was five years old, he had already begun competing internationally. traveling to several contests in Mexico, Russia, Ukraine, Ireland, and other locations

Sage was so active that his abs began to show as early as age 5. This was a side effect of his regular competitions, stringent diet, and already rigorous training routine.

From age 9 to age 11, he gradually switched from karate to jiu-jitsu. At age 9, he was the youngest individual to ever grace the cover of Sports Karate Magazine.

Later in 2012, he was honored for his accomplishments in martial arts by being admitted to the Black Belt Magazine Hall of Fame.

Career in MMA

Sage’s amateur MMA career got off to a losing start. But after that, he went on to triumph in five amateur battles and finally join with the UFC.

Sage was the newest fighter on the UFC roster when he signed up. Sage has started to put less emphasis on his college studies to concentrate on his mixed martial arts career.

The debate surrounding his debut UFC bout (against Bryan Barberena) is intense.

Sage was defeated by submission, but he insisted that strep throat was to blame. His Barberena, who felt Northcutt was making excuses, didn’t take well to this.

By joining ONE Championship in 2018, Sage began a new chapter in his professional life.

Bodybuilding competitor

In his teen years, Sage participated in two bodybuilding competitions. He won the Texas state championships as well as the Teen Physique division at the NPC Europa event in Texas. Sage Northcutt is currently juggling a difficult college course and his MMA training, so it is unlikely that he will ever compete as a bodybuilder.

Sage-Northcutt-workout

Now, I work out my chest, shoulders, and triceps one day, followed by my legs the following (super heavy squats). I then miss a day.

Next, work your back and biceps (for the back, unless a fight is imminent, I always do deadlifts). I’ve always done extremely short sets of powerlifting-style exercises. I typically leave the gym after 1 hour.

Training

Sage practices his martial arts in addition to lifting weights. He usually goes to the gym at 10:00 a.m. for boxing or jiu-jitsu, then returns later to concentrate on wrestling or weight training.

He began weight training when he was nine years old and has always favored heavy lifting and quick training. His deadlift has a 5 rep maximum of 450 pounds, and his 5 rep maximum for squats is 405 pounds.

Pre-Fight Instruction

Sage enters a camp phase before a battle. He will work out here two or perhaps three times a day to get his body ready for the big night. He will currently devote most of his time to technique practice and sparring.

Pre-contest training is famously challenging because Sage is typically losing weight at this time. It’s difficult to train consistently while on a calorie restriction, yet it’s during these periods that a genuine champion is made or broken.

Back and biceps exercise by Sage Northcutt

Sage likes to use force and quickness in his MMA matches.

He uses a variety of weights and reps during his workouts to increase his explosiveness and agility when working out and to develop raw power. Here is a picture of his back and biceps workout:

  • Sumo Deadlifts, 3 sets of 5 reps
  • T-Bar Rows, 3 sets of 8 reps
  • Chinups with V-Grip Bar, 3 sets of 10-15 reps
  • Chinups with Hand Towel, 2 sets of 10-15 reps
  • Straight Bar Curl, 3 sets of 8 reps
  • Underhand Pulldown, 3 sets of 8-10 reps
  • Reverse Curl, 2 sets of 8-10 reps

“I know how hard I’ve trained since I was a little kid. I’ve been dieting for 15 years. This whole time I’ve been on strict diets, eating right, and training hard. I’ve worked to be where I am right now.

Since I was 4, I’ve been eating egg whites, fish, grilled chicken, rice, vegetables, super lean hamburger meat, and foods like that, ever since I was just a little kid. I was drinking protein shakes back then.”

Nutrition

Five meals are consumed by Sage each day. He typically eats brown rice, vegetables, and a few pounds of lean meat.

He tops this off by using fruit and full-grain bread in meal replacement shakes. Since he was 4 years old, Sage has followed a healthful diet. Even now, he still employs the same shaking.

The Sage Northcutt Diet Regimen

As part of his regular nutrition, Sage makes care to eat a variety of healthy meals. He has been able to maintain his extreme leanness all year.

Sage has found that making his meals and plans in advance has made it easier for him to fight at a heavier or lighter weight class. Here are some examples of the regular meals he consumes:

  • Turkey burger with brown rice and vegetables
  • Beef with sweet potatoes and vegetables
  • Scrambled eggs with potatoes for breakfast
  • Muffins as a pre-or post-workout meal for replenishing glycogen

Supplements

Sage takes BCAAs, glutamine, and protein drinks as supplements. A lot of people, including other MMA fighters, have accused him of utilizing performance-enhancing chemicals when it comes to dietary supplements.

But none of these claims have ever materialized. Sage has undergone numerous arbitrary drug tests, and none of them have revealed a positive result, thus it is safe to assume that Super Sage’s success is entirely genetic (and the result of his tireless training).

Influences and Idols

I had always valued my Christian beliefs. A pastor friend of our family told my dad and me when I was around 11 or 12 years old that I should utilize martial arts as a platform that God was giving me to spread the good news of Jesus Christ to others whenever and wherever I could.

At about the same time, a preacher who was preaching in front of the crowd came down the aisle and approached me in the audience, telling me that I would spread the gospel to millions of people.

What Sage Northcutt Teaches Us?

Sage could be excused for being a bit of a golden boy. He seems to excel in whatever he sets his mind to, but what this truly demonstrates is that you can accomplish a lot with effort, commitment, and endurance. Age is merely a number, and Sage started young. You will see results if you put in the time.
