He showed an early interest in acting, as his mother would take him to photoshoots when he was three months old. She then resigned from her job to care for the children full-time, and Ricky had already been in about 60 catalogs and advertising by the time he was six years old.

He made his acting debut as Jon Voight’s son in “The Champ” in 1979, when he was only nine years old. Ricky’s parents took him out of school in the third grade to focus on his acting career after he won a Golden Globe for Best New Male Star of the Year in 1980.

He got Young Artist Awards for “The Earthling” and “Silver Spoons,” as well as Director of the Year for “Whiskey Lullaby.”
