After$1.25 RECIPE
In the United States, oats have been pigeonholed into predominantly sweet meals.
We usually eat oats sweetened for breakfast or in crumbly desserts, however, savory flavors work just as well with oats as they do with any other grain.
This savory oatmeal is a filling and filling supper that can be made with any ingredients you have on hand. This could become your new favorite low-cost dinner!
WHAT TYPE OF OATS SHOULD I USE FOR THIS RECIPE?
Although you may make savory oats with any type of oat, the recipe below is for old-fashioned rolled oats, which cook rapidly (about 5 minutes).
I like the texture and convenience of old-fashioned rolled oats. Steel-cut oats take a long time to cook and require more liquid. Quick oats cook faster but lack texture.
SAVORY OATMEAL FLAVORING
Oats have a very bland flavor on their own, which I believe contributes to their poor reputation. Here are some helpful hints for producing flavorful savory oatmeal:
- In a delicious broth, cook them. Better Than Bouillon is one of my favorite brands since it has a bright flavor. It also comes in a variety of flavors.
- Use Aromatic compounds. A small amount of fresh garlic or ginger may make a big difference! Also delicious are green onions or shallots.
- Season to taste. You may try Everything Bagel Seasoning, jerk seasoning, steak seasoning, furikake, and onion salt, as well as other bottled seasonings.
- Sauce to taste. Add some chili garlic paste, sriracha, or gochujang to spice things up!
TOPPINGS FOR SAVORY OATMEAL
You can top your oatmeal with a variety of tasty toppings in addition to the components that can be added to it. Here are some topping suggestions for oatmeal:
- Grape tomatoes
- Sliced avocado
- Bacon bits
- Jalapeños
- Cilantro
- Green onion
- Parmesan
- French fried onions
- Sprouts
- Edamame
- Soft-boiled egg or a hard-boiled egg
- Breakfast sausage
CAN I PREPARE IT IN ADVANCE?
The answer is Yes. The ingredients in savory oatmeal will automatically alter as you change the number of servings in the recipe card below. Divide the delicious oatmeal into single-serving amounts and chill after cooking. Simply microwave for roughly 2 minutes on high, stirring halfway through. Simply add a splash of water if the oatmeal is too thick.
TURN IT VEGAN
By substituting your favorite cooking oil for the butter in the savory oatmeal recipe below, you can turn it vegan. Coconut oil would work well here because it has a thick, buttery mouthfeel.
