To produce juicy and plump brats in the air fryer, you don’t need a baseball game or a team!

Cook some for the family or the squad, or perhaps a few dozen. Bratwurst cooked in the air fryer turns out juicy and has wonderfully crunchy skin. Add your preferred condiments on top and sandwich it in a soft bun.

  • The Bratwurst casing is crisped in an air fryer while air is circulated throughout to preserve the internal fluids.
  • You may cook up to 12 brats at once, depending on the size of your air fryer.
  • With little effort, the air fryer cooks food more quickly than an oven (and no need to stand over watching and turning them as we do on the grill).
  • Preparation for air fryer brats is minimal, and cleanup is simple.
  • Prepare them either fresh or frozen (just add extra minutes to the air fryer cook time if frozen).
  • Without a substantial tray of homemade brats, buns, and toppings, no gathering is complete! Make a “brat buffet” with a variety of sauces, toppings, and sides!

Ingredients

Brats are a type of German sausage that is typically cooked with a raw pig, however, they can also contain veal. When you bite into them, they “pop” because of their natural casing.

Although Johnsonville brats come in a variety of flavors, pick your favorite! Bratwurst is seasoned with savory ingredients, frequently caraway, garlic, and/or marjoram.

Buns – The perfect strong roll is required for a meaty bratwurst. Use hoagie rolls, hamburger buns, bakery rolls, or brioche buns. You may eat them by yourself as a low-carb or keto dinner!

Assortments & Alterations

With sauerkraut, chopped onion, and grainy mustard, we like to keep things straightforward. Here are a few further favorites:

  • For the final 8 minutes of cooking, try adding sliced bell peppers or caramelized onions to the air fryer.
  • Pickled red onions, sweet or dill pickles, or relish are examples.
  • Ketchup, cheese, or your preferred burger sauce can be added.

The best way to cook brats in an air fryer

While we do enjoy beer brats that are grilled, these are also delicious when cooked in the air fryer for a quick supper with a side of coleslaw!

  1. Put uncooked brats in the basket or on the air fryer tray in a single layer (depending on your air fryer).
  2. 13–14 minutes of air frying, flipping after 8 minutes (per the recipe below).
  3. Brats should continue to cook until a meat thermometer reads 165°F.

Before eating, give them some time to sit as they can burst and emit heated juices. Serve them with fried potatoes, slaw, or beans!

Air-Frying Frozen Brats

Frozen brats can be air-fried without being thawed beforehand. Pre-heat the air fryer as instructed, adding an additional 5 to 6 minutes for frying. Make sure the bratwurst reaches 165°F by using a meat thermometer.

  1. Preheat the air fryer to 360°F of temperature.
  2. In the air fryer basket, arrange the brats in a single layer.
  3. Once flipped, cook for a further 5 to 6 minutes, or until the internal temperature reaches 165°F, after cooking them for 8 minutes.
  4. Serve with chosen toppings and/or in buns.

Notes

Make sure the internal temperature of the brats reaches 165°F.

The brats should not be pierced before cooking to preserve their juices. When monitoring the temperature, proceed with caution because they may spray hot liquid if penetrated.

Before serving or topping, give it some time to cool.

Use the air fryer to reheat food for up to 5 minutes, or until thoroughly heated.

Pizza or pasta are fantastic dishes to add leftovers to.
