Carbonated drinks have sugars in them and are therefore not healthy. Manufacturers of diet coke promote it as a soda drink without calories and sugars.
But despite that, diet coke is not a healthy option for quenching your thirst. Read to know the 5 reasons that you should stop having it!
Diet coke
This coke is a sugar-free and calories-free carbonated drink that has artificial sweeteners instead of sugars. Coca-Cola company launched this product in 1982 on 8th July. Since that time, it has found many fans. Its formulation is different from its other cola drinks.
It claims that it has no sugars in it and hence the calories are zero. It is just a fizzy drink sans the calories and is a good option for diabetics and weight-conscious people who are monitoring their sugar and calorie intake minutely.
Many people, therefore, switched to this coke. But is it healthy? The answer is a big No. This coke also has its negative points.
Hampers kidney function
Diet coke consumed in large quantities can lead to kidney stone formation and also kidney damage. There is a high risk of renal impairment in a person who drinks more than 2 cans of this coke daily. To avoid this, avoid this coke. One can have it occasionally but not daily or in large quantities.
Weight gain
There is a belief that this coke has no calories and hence is good for the waist. But this is a myth. Studies have shown that people who consumed diet coke daily had 70% larger waist circumference size compared to those who did not drink it. It is obvious that despite the claims and use of the word diet on it, this coke does cause weight gain and it is best to not have it.
Dental caries
This coke is acidic. Hence while drinking it touches the teeth and can erode the tooth enamel. This leads to teeth sensitivity and caries and needs for fillings and other dental treatments. Therefore, diet coke is not a healthy option for thirst-quenching or during parties or social gatherings.
High cholesterol
This coke also causes a rise in the unhealthy fats and cholesterol in the blood of the drinker. This predisposes to heart diseases and also stroke.
Leads to dehydration
Diet coke has caffeine in it. And caffeine is a known diuretic. It leads to increased urine formation and loss of water from the body.
Hence, if one is thirsty, avoid drinking this coke. It will momentarily quench your thirst but after that lead to loss of water and cause further dehydration.
Due to these side-effects of coke that are not advertised, one should not opt for having this coke. Instead of it, it is best to take plain water or fresh fruit juices or cut pieces of watery fruits such as watermelon.
This will quench the thirst and also not cause the above problems in the long run.
