Eileen auditioned for the role of Lisa in 1960 and was immediately hired; she believed Lisa and herself were the same person. She stayed on the show for a while until 1963, when she left for a few months and was replaced by actress Pamela King. She returned to the show two years later, but only to play Lisa in her spin-off “Our Private World.” However, the show was terminated after only about 30 episodes, and Eileen returned to the main series. She quit the series for the third time in 1983, after a disagreement with executive producer Mary-Ellis Bunim about her new contract. However, she returned the next year; during her absence, Betsy von Furstenberg played Lisa.
During the first decade of her depiction of Lisa, Eileen rose to prominence as one of the main soap opera performers. She had to hire a publicist, making her the first soap opera celebrity to do so. Eileen never lost up on her dream of becoming a Broadway star, beginning with the off-Broadway production of “The Fantasticks” and later as Honey in “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?” During this time, she worked in both the theater and on the screen, filming “As the World Turns” in the morning, then later on the stage in “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?” and finally in the evening in the musical “The Fantasticks.” She then worked on several plays, including “Abe Lincoln in Illinois,” “Mane Loves,” “Nite Club Confidential,” and “Summer of the Seventeenth Doll,” all off-Broadway, but also in regional theatre productions including “It Had To Be You,” “Goodbye Charlie,” “Cat on a Hot Tin Roof,” and “Plaza Suite.”
