You’ll sprinkle this bagel seasoning over, well, everything once you have it on hand! It’s crispy, nutty, garlicky, and tasty all at the same time.
I first created this Bagel Seasoning for Jack’s homemade bagels, but once I got it, I began sprinkling it on everything. Its nutty, garlicky flavor and addictive crunch elevate practically any dish, including roasted vegetables, eggs, and avocado toast.
“Why would I make my own Bagel Seasoning when I can buy a jar at Trader Joe’s?” you might think. I understand, but a homemade spice mix has one major advantage over store-bought mixes: you have complete control over the ratios.
The Bagel Seasoning recipe below is my ideal version – stronger on the sesame, and lighter on the salt. It’s delicious as is, but feel free to tweak it to your liking.
If you prefer a stronger flavor, add additional dried garlic or poppy seeds, or increase the onion or salt. As you go, taste and adjust. If you’re like me, you’ll know you’ve nailed it when you can’t stop eating it straight from the bowl!
Ingredients for Bagel Seasoning
This everything bagel seasoning recipe only requires 5 basic ingredients:
- Sesame seeds — In my opinion, sesame seeds are the most important part of any bagel seasoning. Their toasted, nutty flavor complements the dried onion, garlic, and salt nicely. This seasoning mixture is aesthetically distinctive because of a combination of black and white sesame seeds, but if you can’t get both, just one will suffice.
- Poppy seeds are added for crunch.
- Dried minced garlic and onion — These ingredients offer a lot of garlicky, oniony flavor to the dish.
- Flaky sea salt — I’ve used coarse sea salt and kosher salt in my everything bagel seasoning, but flaky sea salt is by far the finest. In contrast to coarse salt, which is very salty in this mix, flaked sea salt is delicious. It brings out the flavors of the other components, which are nutty and flavorful.
Combine the onion and garlic flakes, sesame seeds, poppy seeds, and salt in a small bowl. That concludes our discussion.
You could toast the sesame seeds and poppy seeds beforehand before tossing them in, but I prefer the flavor of the raw seeds here. Also, if you want to bake the seasoning on bagels, don’t toast the seeds first. In the oven, they’ll burn!
How to Use It?
This seasoning blend is one of our favorites for our handmade bagels (and just about anything else)! Here are a few examples of how we like to use it:
- It’s great on avocado toast.
- It’s great as a garnish for hummus or baba ganoush! These dips pair well with the nutty, garlicky flavor of this seasoning blend because they’re both created with tahini and garlic.
- It’s delicious on roasted broccoli, Brussels sprouts, or cauliflower! Add a sprinkle of tahini sauce to take this dish to the next level.
- Serve it overfilled baked potatoes with cashew sour cream.
- For a salty, crunchy snack, toss it with roasted chickpeas or popcorn.
- Toss it on top of your favorite sort of egg! It’s great on deviled eggs, soft or hard-boiled eggs, and sunny-side-up eggs, among other things.
