Having Trouble Gaining Weight
In contrast to most ladies, Bethany’s journey didn’t start with her having an eating disorder or being overweight.
Simply put, Bethany was uncomfortable with her thin physique; she believed that her wide shoulders made her appear out of proportion, which had a detrimental effect on her confidence and self-esteem.
Her confidence was so low at this point that she felt uncomfortable wearing anything but baggy t-shirts.
A loss of control
She started weighing herself, which made her even more conscious of how ‘underweight’ she was. As a result, her attitude significantly declined, and she became aware that she was behaving in a “vile” manner toward her family and friends.

“I started weighing myself, and that’s when I started to lose some control. Every morning, I would weigh myself, and the number would fluctuate.
“I was eating all this junk stuff in the hopes of gaining weight, but it didn’t do me any good because my mood was terrible, I was rude to my parents, and I had no energy.”

Her Father’s Death,
A year before Bethany’s high school graduation, she received some bad news: her father had been diagnosed with cancer, which made her confidence problems even worse.
Bethany experienced another difficult time in her life after the death of her father. She was inspired by this, though, and she resolved to confront her demons in memory of her father.
“I was determined, for him, to make something for myself, to make University work, and to make him proud. He always wanted me to go to University and he was taking a degree himself – he was an incredibly intelligent man.
“He was my number 1 fan for everything in life, for everything I did he would support me, and for everything that went wrong, he would be there to help me. So I fought my problems and gave University a go.” – Bethany Tomlinson
Beginning a fitness journey
Bethany believed that moving away from home to attend college after graduating from high school would mark a significant turning point in her life on both a physical and mental level.
Finding courage in hardship, Bethany came to terms with her unhealthy concern with weight and started looking for support online through fitness forums. She eventually set up an Instagram account, largely to follow fitness models for motivation and direction.
Ultimately, Bethany found the drive to start her fitness journey after viewing the stunning transformation images of female athletes. Soon after, she began working out in the gym to learn more about diet and fitness.

Bethany was first too frightened to lift weights in the gym when she first started her fitness adventure. She ultimately started lifting weights after growing weary of using the cardio equipment, and she hasn’t looked back since.

According to Bethany, rigorous diets nearly always result in a breaking point at some time, so she steers clear of simple carbohydrates and focuses primarily on complex carbohydrate sources (apart from on allocated cheat days).
She attempts to take between 120 and 130 grams of protein per day because she weighs about 120 pounds.

Bethany credits her parents with being the ones that most motivated her to achieve her health objectives. Though the loss of her father rocked her world, she used it as inspiration to improve her life and honor her father.
Bethany lists Katy Hearn as one of her primary fitness industry role models; she claims that Katy’s remarkable transformation gave her hope that she could drastically alter her physical appearance.
