Biography

Young Years

Denis was born in the Russian village of Tikhoretsk and developed into a very active young man. At age 10, he joined his school’s track and field team, which inevitably sparked his interest in physical fitness.

He started working out in the gym to improve his athleticism in support of the sport and quickly developed a passion for it.

Denis had a shredded body by the time he was 17 in 1998 when he enrolled in college to study physical education and sports. He learned the value of nutrition over the following two years and set out to gain some muscle.

Becoming a Personal Trainer  and Fitness Modelling

Denis relocated to Moscow in 2007 when he was 26 years old to pursue a career in fitness. In his newly adopted city, he was able to land a job as a personal trainer while still maintaining his body-sculpting routine.

Over the following several years, the future IFBB Pro put on a lot of muscle mass thanks to his extensive knowledge of nutrition and training techniques.

At this point, Denis started getting requests to participate in photo shoots as a fitness model.

He became aware of the possibility of a promising career in the sector as a result.

IFBB and the First Competition

Denis ultimately decided to participate in his first competition in 2012, when he was 31 years old. Despite losing, he still had a lot of valuable experience that will be useful later.

He went back on stage at the 2013 Moscow Regional Open Cup after another year of rigorous practice. He left the performance as the best routine winner, which inspired him, even more, to do well.

Following two additional low-key competitions in which he finished third each time, Denis entered his greatest competition to date, the 2013 IFBB World Championship.

He impressively finished second, which was the highest finish he had ever had.

He was encouraged by his development and more determined than ever to win his maiden match.

Acquiring his Pro Card

Shortly after finishing second at the World Championships, he competed in the Arnold Classic Europe. He left this time in the first place.

All of Denis’ hard work in the gym had paid off; in addition to the win, he had also received his Pro Card. He had finally achieved his goals of becoming a professional bodybuilder and winning his first contest at the age of 32.

Life as a Pro and going back to College

Denis made an astounding 7 show appearances in 2014. He was unable to repeat his triumph in the Arnold Classic; his best finish was third.

Since his most recent match against 2014 IFBB Pro Felicia Romero, Denis has decided to continue his schooling.

He earned his degree in analytical economics from the Moscow State University of Economics, Statistics, and Informatics (MESI).

Training

Every week, Denis Gusev works out for five days in the gym. On days that he exercises, he does cardio in the morning and then goes back to the gym in the evening to do weightlifting.

Denis, though, is adamant that diet is more crucial than exercise, and he is more stringent about sticking to a diet plan than a workout schedule.

“A good diet that is sometimes more important than the actual workout.”

Nutrition

To fuel his body and maintain a high metabolism, Denis attempts to eat 6-7 meals each day. To keep his shredded figure, he bases his diet on lean proteins and complex carbohydrates.

Diet Plan:

Denis’ diet plan would look something like this:

  • Meal 1 – 50g porridge with Milk and Honey
  • Meal 2 – Beef with Buckwheat
  • Meal 3 – White Fish with Buckwheat
  • Meal 4 – Chicken with Buckwheat
  • Meal 5 – Fish with Salad (Tomato, Cucumber, Low-Fat Cheese)
  • Meal 6 – Fish with Salad (Tomato, Cucumber, Low-Fat Cheese)
