Dr. Michael Mosley on the aging process

Dr. Michael Mosley is an expert in weight loss and has a rich plethora of experience in managing obese patients with diet and lifestyle changes. He believes that genes play a minor role in the aging process. It is mainly the lifestyle of a person that determines it. Healthy lifestyle and healthy eating are essential to have a youthful look and feel. Michael presents a number of health shows on British TV.

Moreover, Michael is of the opinion that eating to promote gut health and a healthy gut microbiome can help a person survive longer and age less. He had written in Daily Mail:

“We know that what, and how much, you eat play key roles in whether you stay healthy or not — but what seems to be equally important is the impact this food has on your gut microbiome, the mix of bacteria, viruses and fungi, which live in your intestines.”

Michael talked about the study published in the journal, Nature Aging in April 2023. Researchers from Guangxi Academy of Sciences in China studied gut microbiology of 1575 aged 20 to over 100 years of age.

Explaining the findings, Michael said:

They found that the healthy centenarians (those least troubled by age-related disease) had a very diverse mix of bugs in their guts, with particularly high levels of a bacterial species called Bacteroidetes.”

“This bug has previously been linked to slimness, and is present in far smaller amounts in the guts of people who are overweight.”

Other studies have shown that a healthy and diverse gut microbiome means lesser body inflammation, better immunity and lower risks of cardiovascular disease and cancer.

Ways to boost the healthy gut microbiome

The best way to increase the healthy gut microbiome is by eating healthy foods. Michael suggests to eat a lot of plant based foods particularly those with high amounts of dietary fiber in them. He also advises consumption of colorful fruits and vegetables daily. One should aim to have a plate full of rainbow colors in the form of real fruits and vegetables. Have at least five servings of fruits and vegetables daily.

Probiotic foods are good for increasing the growth and proliferation of healthy bacteria in the gut. These foods include yoghurt and other fermented foods such as kefir, sauerkraut, pickles, and kimchi. Have them daily. Even a small amount of these are beneficial.

Additionally, one should avoid sugary and high carb foods. These hasten the aging process and cause chronic illnesses and body inflammation. They disturb gut health too. And thus in turn causes rapid and premature aging.
