Biography

Wrestlers’ Family

The son of professional wrestler Wayde Douglas Bowles AKA Rocky Johnson and Ata Johnson, Dwayne Douglas Johnson is also known by his stage name The Rock. He was born in Hayward, California, on May 2, 1972.

Since his early years, Dwayne has been under “pressure” because of his family’s expectations, which he believes built his strong character and made him accustomed to those high expectations.

His grandfather, Peter Maivia, was a wrestler, and his grandmother, Lia Maivia, was one of the few female wrestling promoters. His cousin, Savelina Fanene, is also a professional wrestler.

At the age of 16, Dwayne briefly moved to Honolulu, Hawaii, where he attended President William Mckinley High School, before moving back to the United States with his family.

Growing up, Dwayne was constantly on the move as his father’s job required frequent relocations. He briefly lived in the suburbs of Grey Lynn in New Zealand before moving back to the United States with his family.

Dwayne began playing football at Freedom High School and joined the track and field and wrestling teams. His family stayed in Bethlehem for a longer amount of time, allowing Dwayne to concentrate on his career and education.

A Career in Football and Turn of Events

Dwayne’s family finally relocated to Miami, where he accepted a full scholarship to attend the University of Miami, and his ambition to play football became greater with each passing day.

Dwayne was an accomplished defensive tackle who was well-liked by his coach and colleagues. Because of his stellar play, Dwayne was selected to the Miami Hurricanes’ National Championship squad.

Dwayne was distraught when he was let go from the squad two months into the season, but finally, he decided to go on and find another interest.

This all changed when he moved to Canada and joined the prestigious Calgary Stampeders.

A Great Wrestler’s Birth

Despite his father’s initial opposition, Dwayne was determined would become a wrestler. As the years passed, Dwayne understood he wanted to follow in the footsteps of the majority of his family and decided to pursue wrestling.

Dwayne’s first few tryout matches went quite well, with victories over The Brooklyn Brawler at a home event and defeats of Owen Hard and Chris Candido in the other two.

However, he and Bart Sawyer won the USWA World Tag Team Championship twice in the summer of 1996 while tag-team wrestling under the moniker “Flex Kavana.”

Dwayne became more well-known and secured a contract with the WWF at this pivotal point in his career. He then started training with Tom Prichard, Mark Henry, and Achim Albrecht.

The Debut of Rocky Maivia

Dwayne was first hesitant to adopt the “Rocky Maivia ring name, but Vince McMahon and Jim Ross encouraged him to do so. Rocky Maiva was a combination of his father’s and grandfather’s ring names, and it served as the basis for his WWF debut.

His first match was an eight-man elimination match on November 17th, where Dwayne single-handedly eliminated Goldust and Crush, and his debut was on November 4th, 1996, on Monday Night Raw.

However, Dwayne didn’t have it easy when he first entered the WWF; due to his “cheesy” persona, he was frequently jeered at and rejected by the organization’s fans.

Dwayne won his first singles battle, defeating Salvatore Sincere, and this marked the start of his ascent to the top of the WWF hierarchy.

In 1997, he won the International Championship, which he later successfully defended at In Your House 13: Final Four.

The WWF fans were increasingly angry toward Dwayne after he lost his title to Savio Vega via count out in April 1997. Chants like “Die, Rocky, die!” and “Rocky sucks!” were frequent throughout his matches.

1997–1998 Timeframe

In April 1997, Dwayne was defeated by Owen Hart for the Intercontinental Championship, and later that year, while competing against Mankind, he injured his knee, forcing him to miss several months of action.

After coming back four months later, he announced his new ring identity as The Rock and started calling the names of the fans in his promos and WWF TV interviews.

The Rock made his Intercontinental Championships debut on March 30, 1998, where he defeated Faarooq and claimed control of the Nation of Domination; Dwayne successfully defended the title against the same foe a year later.

The Corporation, 1998–1999

After gaining popularity and having good promos, Dwayne changed his persona and began referring to himself as “The People’s Champion,” winning over several WWF fans who had previously been opposed to him.

Dwayne’s answer to Mr.McMahon was defeating his associate, Mankind in the finals of a WWF tournament. This, however, resulted in a confrontation between The Rock and Mr.McMahon.

McMahon claimed to Dwayne that he had an issue with “the people” to provoke him and his new nickname, “The People’s Champion.”

Dwayne almost lost his title in a rematch with Mankind at a pay-per-view event a few months later, but he survived and kept it after passing out during one of Mankind’s submission maneuvers.

On February 15, Dwayne and Mankind officially ended their ongoing feud after several months of back-and-forth fighting.

A ladder match with Mankind and Big Show on that day was also notable for Dwayne’s third WWF Championship victory. A month later, he lost the WWF Championship to Stone Cold Steve Austin at Wrestlemania.

Pairing up With a Former Enemy

As 1999 came to a close, Dwayne and Mankind competed in several battles against Big Show and The Undertaker for the WWF Tag Team Championships, winning the title once out of a possible three times.

Following the Championships, Dwayne and Mankind continued to perform hilarious skits, with This is Your Life, which was based on the TV show, being their most well-known.

Dwayne participated in the Royal Rumble match in January 2000 and, along with Big Show, was one of the two men left standing.

Big Show attempted to pin Dwayne by sending him over the top rope with a power slam technique, but Dwayne blocked him in the ring and eventually returned to the ring as the victor.

Sadly for Dwayne, he wasn’t able to take the WWF Championship from Triple H, who along with Vince, defeated Dwayne during the match.

Dwayne once again defeated his arch-enemy, Big Show, in the episode of Raw Is War, on the 13th of March 2000. In addition to beating him, Dwayne also qualified to face Triple H, the WWF Champion in his next match at WrestleMania.

4th WWF Championships Victory

The Rock and Triple H continued their battle for a few weeks, and eventually, The Rock won the WWF Championship for the fourth time.

They fought again on May 21 in the Iron Man match, but this time Dwayne was disqualified because The Undertaker stepped in between them, giving Triple H the advantage and the victory by one point.

After winning the match against Shane McMahon, Triple H, and Vince McMahon on June 25th by pinfall, Dwayne earned his fifth WWF Championship, which he went on to defend for the next few months in three matches.

Dwayne won his first match on July 23rd against Chris Benoit and Fully Loaded, his second match was on August 27 when he successfully defended his title against SummerSlam, Kurt Angle, and Triple H, and his final match was on September 24th when he successfully defended his title against The Undertaker and Kane.

The X-Seventh Wrestlemania

In October 2000, after losing the WWF Championship to Angle at No Mercy, Dwayne’s tenure as champion came to an end. He then faced Rikishi, whom he defeated at the Survivor Series pay-per-view event.

Following the victory, Dwayne attempted to reclaim the WWF title but failed, losing to Kurt Angle in a six-man match at Armageddon.

A month later, Dwayne teamed up with The Undertaker for the WWF Tag Team Championships, winning the event but losing it the following night to the same opponents.

The conflict between Dwayne and Angle over the WWF Championship title continued in the Spring of 2001, culminating in February when Dwayne eventually prevailed over Angle to earn his sixth WWF Championship.

At WrestleMania X-Seven, Dwayne faced up against Stone Cold Steve Austin, the winner of the Royal Rumble, who had teamed up with Vince McMahon and was able to defeat Dwayne and win the championship.

Removal from the WWF

Dwayne fought Austin and McMahon again the night after his defeat, but this time Triple H also got involved.

Dwayne had thought that Triple H would aid him in defeating his opponents, but instead of doing so, Triple H attacked Dwayne instead of Austin and McMahon, which caused Dwayne’s defeat.

Dwayne was given an extended suspension from the WWF following the match, so he opted to use the opportunity to play a part in the action-fantasy movie The Mummy Returns.

Comeback

Midway through the summer of 2001, Dwayne returned to the WWF and had to choose between staying with The Alliance or joining the organization.

After losing the WCW Championship to Chris Jericho at the No Mercy pay-per-view event, Dwayne continued his incredible winning streak by defeating Booker T.

The following night, however, Dwayne and Jericho joined up to defeat Dudley Boyz to capture the WWF Tag Team Championships.

As a member of the WWF, Dwayne had to compete in a ten-man elimination match against the best members of The Alliance before defeating Jericho on November 5, 2001’s episode of Raw and capturing his second WCW Championship, afterward renamed to World Championships.

After a long and arduous battle, Dwayne was declared the winner, forcing the opposition to disband.

His final match of 2001 came at the World Championships against Chris Jericho, who defeated Dwayne and claimed both the WCW and WWF titles to his name. By the time the match ended, only Dwayne and Steve Austin were left standing.

Competing With Hulk Hogan

Dwayne’s only victory during this time was against The Undertaker at another pay-per-view event called No Way Out.

A few months before WrestleMania, Dwayne challenged Jericho for the WWF Championship title at the Royal Rumble pay-per-view battle. Dwayne’s attempt was unsuccessful, as Jericho once again came out victorious.

Both Dwayne and Hulk were the best wrestlers of their eras, and the encounter between them was hailed as remarkable by many.

At WrestleMania X8, Dwayne challenged the legendary Hulk Hogan to a fight.

After winning the match and pinning Hulk Hogan at WrestleMania X8, Dwayne Johnson, aka The Rock, allied with the legendary wrestler.

Wrestling Records Are Broken

Dwayne’s first WWE bout in 2002 occurred on July 21 when he defeated The Undertaker and Kurt Angle in a triple threat match, gaining his record-breaking eighth WWE Champion title in the process. In May 2002, WWF was changed to WWE.

After losing the WWE Champion title to Brock Lesnar in August of that same year, along with his previous record for the youngest WWF/WWE Champion from 1998, Dwayne went on to defend his WWE championship against Lesnar and Triple H in the Global Warning match.

Despite the jeers from the audience, Dwayne vowed to everyone that he would always be “The People’s Champion” after losing to Brock.

Leaving the WWE

After years of working as a professional wrestler for WWE, Dwayne started to appear in other, non-wrestling roles rather than in as many matches.

Dwayne declared he was no longer a part of WWE and that his professional contract with them was terminated after organizing a pie-eating competition as a component of the WWE event.

Occasional Shows From 2004 through 2009

The following year, Dwayne interviewed WWE where he discussed his experience with the federation, his acting career, etc. He made a surprise appearance on Raw in August 2004 and defeated his opponents La Résistance and Jonathan Coachman.

In March 2008, Dwayne welcomed his father and grandpa into the WWE Hall of Fame; giving a speech in front of many people. Nearly three years later, Dwayne made another appearance on a WWE show.

Dwayne made jokes with wrestlers like Chris Jericho, John Cena, Mick Foley, Santino Marella, Steve Austin, and Shawn Michaels during his address, displaying his good-natured humor.

Dwayne created a video SmackDown promo in October 2009 to celebrate the show’s tenth anniversary.

Dwayne and John Cena’s Conflict

During the show’s promo, Dwayne addressed fans and other notable wrestlers like John Cena; getting the crowd to cheer and sing along.

It was his first appearance in seven years. On February 14, 2011, Dwayne was featured as the host of WrestleMania on an edition of Raw.

This also marked the start of Dwayne’s online battle with John Cena, with whom he frequently made fun of the wrestler’s attire.

When the two eventually confronted each other in the ring alongside Alex Riley and The Miz, Dwayne was able to hold off Alex and Miz, but John Cena proved to be one opponent too many, blindsiding Dwayne with a wrestling move called an “Attitude Adjustment.”

Cena’s “Once in a Lifetime” Battle

The match between Dwayne and John Cena at WrestleMania titles in April 2012 had been anticipated for a year; many referred to it as a “Once in a Lifetime” occasion.

John was convinced he could use a People’s Elbow move on Dwayne during the bout, but Dwayne was prepared and countered with a Rock Bottom to win.

The following night on Raw, Dwayne lauded John and his fighting prowess, calling their bout “an honor” for him, and concluded by declaring that he would win the WWE Championship once more.

WWE Championship Titles Eight

The two had begun a feud that lasted for over a month, culminating on January 27th, when Dwayne made his comeback to WWE bouts in the first episode of Raw in early January 2013 to face CM Punk.

When CM Punk defeated Dwayne that day with the aid of The Shield, Vince McMahon wanted to take away CM Punk’s championship, but Dwayne insisted on restarting the bout.

After a restart, Dwayne triumphed against CM Punk to capture his record-breaking eighth WWE Champion title.

Significant Tendon Injury

After holding the WWE Championship for 70 days, Dwayne Johnson lost it to John Cena; he had intended to seek a rematch with John, but an injury prevented it.

During WrestleMania, Dwayne tore his adductor and abdominal tendons from his pelvis, preventing him from competing in the ensuing WWE Championships.

The damage was so severe that Dwayne needed a drawn-out, difficult procedure to repair his tendons.

The Rock’s Sporadic Appearances as Dwayne Johnson

Dwayne startled everyone by making an appearance in a match against Rusev and Lana on October 6, of the same year, and threw Rusev out of the ring.

In the spring of 2014, Dwayne made an appearance at WrestleMania XXX alongside the legendary Hulk Hogan and Stone Cold Steve Austin.

By 2016, Dwayne has made several more appearances in both wrestling and non-wrestling capacities, including the Royal Rumble event in 2015, Raw, and WrestleMania 32.

Wrestling Becoming More Popular

Dwayne was able to break into mainstream pop culture and the music industry thanks to his popularity in the realm of professional wrestling.

He appeared in several singles, music videos, and soundtrack albums, including “WWF The Music, Vol.5” and “It Doesn’t Matter.”

Dwayne claims that the popularity of the Saturday Night Live event he hosted in 2000, which featured some of his fellow wrestlers, including Mick Foley, Triple H, and The Big Show, led to him receiving multiple invites from Hollywood studios.

In movies like That ’70s Show and Star Trek: Voyager, Dwayne played a character who was an alien wrestler and used The Rock’s characteristic skills. In That ’70s Show, Dwayne played the part of his father.

The Rock Legacy in Wrestling: Dwayne Johnson

Dwayne is regarded by many as one of the best professional wrestlers of all time, having amassed an enormous amount of success during his lengthy and storied wrestling career.

While his former opponent and fellow wrestler John Cena referred to The Rock as “the biggest superstar in the history of WWE,” legendary wrestler Hulk Hogan called Dwayne “the biggest superstar in the business.”

The Attitude Era even said, “I don’t think there’s ever going to be a star in the history of this business that is bigger than The Rock,” which was echoed by many wrestlers, including John Cena and Hulk Hogan.

Here are just a few of the numerous records Dwayne holds in the WWE, including the cover of the well-known combat sports game “WWF SmackDown! 2: Know Your Role.”

  • The rawest show events in one year – 38 in the year 2000.
  • One out of three WWE wrestlers ever to be on a headline of WrestleMania in three different decades (the other two are The Undertaker and Shawn Michaels) – the 1990s, 2000s, and 2010s.
  • The youngest WWF Champion wrestler, and the youngest Intercontinental Champion of his generation
  • The first-ever wrestler to win the WWE/WWF Championships six, later, seven times

Acting Beginnings

Alongside his WWE career, Dwayne also appeared on television. His first acting gig occurred in 1999 when he portrayed the character of his father in That ’70s Show; appearing in one of the episodes.

In less than a year, Dwayne obtained another role in Star Trek: Voyager series, in the episode “Tsunakatse.”

Breaking into Mainstream

Dwayne’s acting career ‘blew up’ with his parts in movies such as The Scorpion King, Walking Tall, The Mummy Returns, and The Rundown.

He also played a supporting role in the crime-comedy picture Be Cool and was the major villain character in Doom.

In 2006 and 2007, Dwayne acted in Reno 911! Miami, and Gridiron Gang. Which was followed by roles in Southland Tales, The Game Plan, and Get Smart.

A year later, in 2008, Dwayne was nominated for the Favorite Movie Actor award for his portrayal in The Game Plan.

He lost out to Johnny Depp, who won the prize for his great work in the film Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End.

On March 28th, 2009, Dwayne hosted the Nickelodeon Kid’s Choice Awards, and he also starred in the Cory in the House TV Show that same year. Dwayne has lent voices for animation films and shows.

“Invaluable warm up. When training my fav body part (legs) I used to do minimal warm up and just jump into the fire. After years of football and wrestling injuries – 5 knee surgeries, 1 shredded Achilles and the most sexiest fun pain injury of all – ripping the top of my quad and adductor tendon off my pelvis – I’ve learned the best thing we can do is always carve out the proper time to warm up those muscles, tendons & ligaments so we do what we luv… and that’s get in the game and f*ck shit up. “

Training

The Rock Morning Routine

When Dwayne The Rock gets up at 4 AM, he begins his cardio exercise 30 minutes later. The kind of cardio he does depends on his objectives and the parts he will play in his films.

According to The Rock, “I normally hammer out around 30-50 minutes on the elliptical cross trainer first thing in the morning, whether I’m at home or a hotel, after sipping a cup of coffee, but when I’m at home, I like to hit the road as well.”

Dwayne will take his first meal of the day once he has finished his cardio.

Exercise Using Weights

Dwayne often does his second training session of the day—weightlifting—a couple of hours after his breakfast.

Working out is my therapy, and it’s cheaper than a shrink. I can’t fathom my life without training, honestly, says Dwayne The Rock. Despite all of his daily obligations and his busy schedule, The Rock says this is a crucial time for him.

Dwayne does weights the way a normal bodybuilder does: heavy, with lots of volumes, six times a week. This helps him gain muscle and maintain his slim physique.

Each of his exercises consists of 4 sets, with Dwayne The Rock aiming to do 10–12 reps in each set and taking 60–90 seconds to recover between sets.

Preparation for Film

When Dwayne trains for movies, his routine drastically changes. Sometimes, he performs a lot of strength-based exercises, and other times, he only uses bodyweight exercises.

Dwayne spent six months training by himself in Budapest for his role in Hercules, putting in a lot of hard lifting to develop a sculpted figure.

That job required a lot of core strength, so I did a lot of rope work and some water-based and bodyweight work.

However, for San Andreas, it was a completely different situation, and Dwayne did more bodyweight exercises.

Influences and Idols

Dwayne’s father had a significant impact on his wrestling career—if not the biggest one.

His friends, grandparents, and cousin, who were all professional wrestlers themselves, are some of his other influences.

“When life puts you in tough situations, don’t say “Why Me?” Just say “Try Me.””

What Can We Learn From The Rock, Dwayne Johnson?

Dwayne’s childhood hopes of being a professional football player were “shattered” when he learned he couldn’t continue playing the sport.

In retrospect, Dwayne claims that coming to this point is the best thing that has ever happened to him, saying, “You realize that playing in the NFL was the best thing that never happened because it got me here.”

Who knows, maybe certain turns of events that you believe are awful lead you to something even better – just like we’ve seen with Dwayne Johnson The Rock – so you shouldn’t give up because of adversities that arise in your life.

Inspirational Words From Dwayne Johnson The Rock

Dwayne The Rock once encountered a man in the gym who only had one arm and no legs, and the encounter inspired him to pen the following letter to everyone:

Nick Santonastasso, who was born without legs and with only one arm, believes there is nothing he cannot accomplish, and he is correct because he succeeds in everything he sets his mind to.

He has participated in amateur wrestling, spoken as a motivational speaker, trained intensely, and entered bodybuilding competitions.

He remarked, “I could’ve been mad at the world for being born like this, but instead I choose to enjoy life to the fullest, be happy, and crush whatever I put my mind to, and perhaps I can inspire people to do the same.” We talked about the power of choice after my workout.

Yes, sir. Every day, life deals with cards, but we always get to choose how to play them. Keep encouraging everyone around you, and thank you for broadening my view on life. — Dwayne Johnson The Rock
