Ingredients
VEGETABLES Celery is the true star of this dish. For flavor and a little crunch, we add water chestnuts along with some mushrooms and onions. Any vegetable you choose can be added!
SAUCE This is quick and simple to make with a can of cream of celery soup, however, any “cream of” will do (including Homemade Condensed Cream of Mushroom Soup).
TOPPING Once toasted, a buttery breadcrumb coating provides some crunch and flavor. A little cheese is a fantastic addition as well! Add some fried onions that are crispy to the top to change it up.
Making Celery Casserole
Making this dish couldn’t be simpler; just adhere to these easy steps:
- Butter, herbs, celery, and mushrooms are cooked; water chestnuts, and soup are then added.
- Put in a casserole dish, then sprinkle the buttery crumbs on top.

Have Extras?
The leftover vegetable casserole can be stored in the fridge, covered, for up to 4 days. Reheat for 15 minutes in the oven at 350°F. Transfer to a container that can be frozen. If used within two months, it will taste the best.
Celery Casserole
A homemade celery casserole is such a delicious & satisfying side dish or entree!
15 minutes to prepare
30 minutes for cooking period: 45 minutes servings: 6 |
Ingredients
- 3 tablespoons butter
- ⅓ cup onion finely diced
- 4 cups sliced celery ½ inch slice
- 1 cup sliced mushrooms optional
- ¼ teaspoon poultry seasoning or ⅛ teaspoon dried ground sage
- 8 ounces canned sliced water chestnuts
- 10.5 oz cream of celery soup

- 4 tablespoons bread crumbs
- 1 tablespoon melted butter
Instructions
- Turn on the 375°F oven. Put the topping ingredients in a bowl and reserve.
- Over medium heat, cook onion in butter in a big skillet. Cook the seasoning, celery, and mushrooms for a further 5-7 minutes, or until crisp and tender. Add the soup and the water chestnuts.
- Top with prepared topping and place in a 1 12 qt casserole dish.
- Bake for 20 to 22 minutes, or until bubbling and golden.
Notes
The celery doesn’t grow any softer in the oven as this casserole warms only till bubbling. Make sure the celery is stove-cooked until crisp and soft.
Any type of vegetable can be added to this dish to make it unique.
This dish can optionally use 1/2 cup of cheddar or swiss cheese.
For up to 4 days, store wrapped celery casserole in the refrigerator. Reheat for 15 minutes, or until well cooked, at 350°F. For up to two months, freeze.
