Biography

Young Years

The majority of Emily’s youth was spent in Calgary, where she and her three siblings were all raised. When she was 12 years old, she and her family relocated to the country and she began working on a ranch.

She spoke about how growing up on a farm gave her the discipline and work ethic she needed to overcome the challenges she would later face. She was always interested in sports and physical activity.

While working on the ranch, Emily also went to school, and in her spare time, she enjoyed playing basketball, volleyball, track & field, football, and other sports.

Emily began playing basketball for the University of Windsor after she started college, where she went on to win two national championships and take the team’s captaincy.

She cited it as one of the turning points in her life that inspired her to keep aiming higher.

Finding of CrossFit

Emily Abbott eventually earned an English degree from Windsor and then decided to take a vacation from exercise by embarking on a long trip to Europe.

When Emily returned from her trip, she wanted to find a way to lose the weight she had gained while away and get back in shape.

After returning from the tour, Emily relocated to St. Louis and began looking into weight loss options. She came across CrossFit and chose to give it a shot.

When Emily first started doing CrossFit, she noticed changes in the way her body was shaped and gains in her stamina.

The Dengue Virus

Abbott set out on her journey once more, but this time she made stops at Crossfit gyms along the way to maintain her level of fitness.

Despite her travels, she vowed to always make time for exercise because she wanted to compete and maintain her fitness all year round.

Emily soon arrived in Australia, where she competed in the 2013 Open Workouts and finished 98th with a score of less than 13.5. She spent that time in the hospital after contracting dengue fever while competing.

The Return

After her illness had passed, Emily went back to Calgary and began spending many hours a day instructing and practicing CrossFit, determined to be successful in the sport.

She also considered competing again, so she planned a week-long trip to St. Louis and hired a coach to launch her professional CrossFit career.

Because she was new to CrossFit at the time, Emily acknowledged that it was difficult at first and that everything felt like an “uphill struggle,” but she was determined to persevere.

It didn’t take long for her to begin making progress, catching the notice of her coach, who was encouraged by her development.

After just one week of training for a few hours each day, Emily remarked, “I realized I got so much better and it was such an amazing experience.” Emmy Abbott

Competitions

Following her return to Canada, Abbott began training under the remote supervision of her coach.

Emily participated in the Open games once more after several months of diligent practice, and her fourth-place finish allowed her to advance to the Canada West Regional.

Emily claimed that the outcome she was able to achieve surprised her. Her main objective was to win a spot in the CrossFit Games, and the only way she could do that was if she triumphed in the Canadian West Regional contest.

She did that. after placing fifth on the first day and winning Event 4, which gave her first place in the overall category.

Even though she performed poorly in event 7 and continued to have outstanding results overall, it was enough for her to place first and earn a spot in the Games.

Naturally, the young athlete was astounded by what she had accomplished in such a short time.

The Competitions and Other Events

Since Emily didn’t have much time to prepare, she returned to St. Louis, where her coach was situated, and began getting ready for more events.

Abbott entered the 2015 Reebok CrossFit Games after a few months of rigorous preparation, and she finished a solid eighth.
