Hangover

After having a lot of alcohol, most people overindulge on junk foods. They get a hangover the next day morning and they start having fatty foods to soak up the alcohol and feel good. But research has shown that these greasy foods are not the answer for hangover. There are three ways to come out of it in a healthier way.

Alcohol overindulgence, junk foods, and hangover

Alcohol overindulgence makes us eat a lot. Most of the foods that we crave for after having lots of alcohol are junk foods. These are high in sugar, fats and salt. Researchers from the University of Buffalo in New York found that this phenomena that is also called drunchies or drunken munchies is due to high blood sugars that alcohol induces in the individual. This gives rise to an increase in the hunger hormones. Due to the high hunger and cravings, the person ends up having foods that are rich in carbs, salt and fats.

Also, there is a popular belief that for a hangover the next day, greasy foods can help. It is said that these foods can soak up the alcohol. But this also is a wrong notion. The researchers argued that the next day there is no alcohol in the body to soak up. So fat rich foods would not assist in curing it. But there are three healthier alternative methods to cure hangover.

Manage the dehydration

The alcohol leads to excessive urination. It has a diuretic action on the body. And the excessive urination in turn leads to dehydration. Hence, correction of dehydration and replenishment of the lost water is the first step to cure ill feelings the next day. Accordingly, the person should have a large glass of water the first thing on waking up in the morning after the overindulgence in alcohol the night before.

Moreover, the breakfast consumed should have a lot of watery foods. Yoghurts are good since they are 85% water. The full fat yoghurt has additional potassium that helps in body fluid restoration. You can also use toppings of hydrating fruits on it such as strawberries and water melons. Sliced bananas can provide potassium boost. This will ease the nausea and headache.

Eggs

There is a lot of lethargic feeling in hangover and this is due to the fact that alcohol raises the levels of stress hormones in the body. Adrenaline is elevated and this leads to poor sleep too. Cravings for high calories food is high at that time. But avoid fried and refined carbs foods at this hour. They will affect the digestive process and slow it. At the same time, these will give rise to a blood sugar spike and a crash after that.

Have eggs at this time. They contain N acetyl cysteine which helps in body detoxification. Japanese scientists have discovered that avocados have certain compounds that can save the liver from alcohol damage. Hence, have a breakfast of wholemeal bread with avocados and eggs.

Proteins

Have fatty fish such as salmon at this time. This has proteins and healthy fats that can curb your appetite and reduce unhealthy cravings. The omega 3 fatty acids also reduce the inflammation. Alcohol increases the levels of cytokines that in adequate amounts are good for the immune system but in excessive amounts, they lead to damaging body inflammation.
