In Latin America, arepas, a delectable pan-fried corn cake, are very common.
They resemble a cross between an English muffin and a tortilla, and they taste great when stuffed or topped with pulled meats, cheese, and vegetables.
With only 3 ingredients, arepas are incredibly simple to prepare and delicious for breakfast, lunch, and dinner! For a wonderful supper, try topping with shredded meat or chicken.
Describe Arepas
Arepas are hearty, tasty cornmeal pastries that are typically served with cheese, pork, and avocados in South American cuisine. Additionally, they can be divided in half and served as sandwiches.
They are produced using cornmeal that has already been cooked, water, salt, and frying oil. Simple! In a cast-iron skillet, the dough is combined, shaped into discs, and fried until golden brown spots appear.
Creating Arepas
Except for the oil, this simple recipe only calls for 3 ingredients and 3 quick steps!
- All ingredients (excluding the oil) should be combined, then the mixture should be packed. Allow it to rest for five minutes.
- Oil a large cast iron skillet and heat it in the interim.
- Form into discs, then brown to golden brown in hot oil. Flip over once more, adding more oil as necessary.
Bake the dish for a further 10 minutes at 350°F before slicing it in half for sandwiches. Enjoy it hot.
Both Goya Masarepa Pre-Cooked Yellow Cornmeal and P.A.N. Pre-Cooked White Corn Meal were used to test this recipe. You can find these things on Amazon or in the International section of most supermarkets.
How Arepas Are Served
The same way I originally enjoyed these delectable cakes, at a restaurant in San Francisco, is how I prefer to serve them: with barbacoa beef on top! They could also be topped with shredded chicken and guacamole, or with pork carnitas. With your preferred meat, this fish taco sauce is also incredibly delicious!
They are also frequently eaten as sandwiches. Simply cut them in half, then fill them with your preferred fillings. It’s no secret that a club sandwich and Italian beef are some of my favorite sandwich fillings.
Arepas are also scrumptious on their own, especially when paired with some honey butter!

Notes
We discovered that you just need roughly 2 cups of warm water if you use a white corn meal.
You can add more water, 1 Tablespoon at a time if the mixture seems a little dry. The mixture should have a little dry yet blended consistency.
For more taste, mix in up to 1 cup of shredded cheese.
Arepas can also be fried in oil.
