CHILI SEASONING (HOMEMADE)

I recently created a pot of basic chili using my homemade chili seasoning, and I wanted to share the homemade chili seasoning mix on its own to show how versatile it is.

HOW TO USE HOMEMADE CHILI SEASONING:

One packet of store-bought chili seasoning is equivalent to this homemade chili seasoning. This homemade chili seasoning will season one 6 serving batch of chili, or one pound of ground beef or ground turkey in a batch of chili.

Brown the ground beef or ground turkey first, then add the homemade chili seasoning and drain any excess grease.

Continue to sauté the seasoning with the steak for another minute, toasting the spices and bringing out their flavors. Add diced tomatoes, beans, or whatever else you like to your chili to finish it off.

You may use this chili spice to season vegetables, meat, or fish before roasting or grilling or sprinkling a bit into your mac and cheese, in addition to preparing a big pot of warm and comfortable homemade chili. What can’t you do with chili seasoning, after all?

HOMEMADE CHILI SEASONING

This easy homemade chili seasoning is produced with only a few cupboard essential spices and can be used for a lot more than just a pot of classic chili!

WHAT EXACTLY IS “CHILI POWDER?”

Chili powder is a spice mixture that is often offered pre-mixed in the United States and is used to season chili. In effect, you could season your pot of chili with just that, but my homemade chili spice kicks it up a notch.
Because the heat level of chili powder varies from brand to brand, taste it before using it in your chili. If your chili powder is spicy, you can leave out or reduce the cayenne pepper in this recipe.

CAN TACO SEASONING BE USED IN CHILI?

They’re really close, but they’re not identical. I use a slightly smokier blend of spices and a pinch of oregano in my Homemade Taco Seasoning. I believe you could use both interchangeably in a pinch, but I like this slightly simpler chili blend.

WHAT IS THE BEST SECRET CHILI INGREDIENT?

Of course, the answer is subjective, but you may add some fun “hidden ingredients” to your chili in addition to your basic homemade chili seasoning. Here are some amusing chili secret ingredients:
  • Cocoa powder or dark chocolate gives an earthy flavor
  • Beer: light Mexican or dark beer, like Guinness
  • Brown sugar or molasses (sweet makes a great contrast to spicy!)
  • Cinnamon, goes nicely with savory flavors as well as sweet!
  • Red wine (for beef chili)
  • Coffee or espresso (similar to cocoa, this provides a deep earthiness)
