The ideal side salad or crunchy taco topper is jicama slaw.
You only need three ingredients Jicama Slaw and a creamy dressing to make this vibrant, somewhat sweet slaw! It’s incredibly simple to make the day before and let the tart flavors mingle!
What do Jicamas mean?
A thick-skinned root vegetable from Mexico, jicama is pronounced: “he-Kah-mah.” It is also referred to as a Mexican potato or a Mexican turnip.
Jicamas contain white flesh that is crunchy, starchy, and moderately sweet. I often compare the texture to that of an apple and a potato. They are a common ingredient in Mexican cooking recipes and can be consumed alone, raw, or cooked (like baked jicama fries).
Kids can enjoy these as snacks, too! Simply wash, peel, and cut them.
Make Jicama Slaw at Home
Simple as 1, 2, 3 to make jicama slaw! It is the ideal side dish because it only calls for three ingredients and a homemade creamy dressing.
- DRESSING: Combine all the ingredients, then chill. Add a tiny bit of red chile powder to the dressing for extra heat!
- SLAW: Jicama and carrots are finely chopped and added to the slaw. For more taste, include other delectable toppings like chopped mango or grated apple.
- COMBINE: Toss the slaw mixture with the dressing to coat thoroughly.
At least an hour before serving, chill in the refrigerator. Use a slotted spoon before serving.
Serving suggestions for jicama slaw
Jicama slaw is a side salad that can be enjoyed on its own, independent of any and all Mexican cuisine.
- Never hesitate to serve it with a chicken, beef, or hog entree.
- And it’s fantastic served as a side dish with grilled shrimp in garlic!
- Try it with grilled shrimp marinated in sriracha if you’re feeling brave!
Jicama Slaw: How Long Does It Last?
Jicama slaw will keep for approximately a week in the fridge, but after a few days, it might become watery.
No worries, just drain out the extra liquid, add more lime juice, salt, and pepper to the flavors, and serve it in a different way.
