One of my all-time favorite comfort meals is sausage gravy. The combination of handmade sausage and gravy has been a longtime family favorite.
It tastes fantastic on biscuits, fried chicken, waffles, or even mashed potatoes!
From homemade mac and cheese to shrimp and grits, comfort food is a favorite around here. This homemade sausage gravy is creamy and tasty.
Make Sausage Gravy at Home
Fantastic Southern sausage is simple to make and practically error-proof with only 5 ingredients! Make your sausage at home by:
- While it cooks, shred the ground sausage into extremely little pieces.
- Do not drain the sausage after cooking since you need the fat to make the roux (or even add some bacon grease—so delicious!).
- Cook for about two minutes after adding the flour.
- As you gradually add milk, mix continuously to ensure that it becomes smooth and creamy. It should be heated to a rolling boil before being simmered for the duration of thickening.
Make sure to add salt and pepper to the sausage. Of course, nothing pairs better with biscuits and gravy than biscuits and gravy, so serve this sausage biscuit gravy right away (or with fried chicken or cornbread)!
Recipe Tips
- Make sure to use a seasoned sausage or season the meat yourself with sage, salt, and pepper.
- Fat: You need fat to make good gravy, so avoid draining your sausage. For extra flavor, including real butter and/or bacon fat!
- Do not complicate: It’s nothing fancy, but sausage is just very delicious. No need to include numerous extras.
- Serve alongside starches Traditional biscuits are wonderful, but any starch—from bread to potatoes—will do!

- Slow Cooker with No Boil Dinner roll
- Simple Home Fries
