The answer to the question “Is a funnel cake a cake?” is “no.” Typically finished with a dusting of powdered sugar, funnel cake is made with a delicious, light batter that is cooked till golden brown. It is a delightful and sweet fair delicacy that nobody ever really thinks to cook at home, which makes me question, why not?

In point of fact, putting them together is not even close to difficult. This homemade funnel cake recipe requires little more than the ability to whisk up a straightforward batter and heat a small amount of oil in a frying pan.

Try the churros, caramel apples, or handmade mini corn dogs if you suddenly have a taste for all the fair food. But why stop there? They will undoubtedly sate your hunger for good!

How to Make Funnel Cakes?

The ingredients in this recipe are enough to make two large funnel cakes. I wanted a small batch because they should be consumed as soon as possible, but I also wanted the flexibility to simply double or quadruple the recipe if necessary.

  1. Mix together wet components.
  2. Stir in the dry ingredients with a whisk until the mixture is entirely smooth.
  3. Pour the batter into the hot oil in slender lines, allowing it to swirl and overlap as it cooks.
  4. Cook for a short while, until golden, and delicately turn using tongs.

Take off the heat and place it on a paper towel to soak up any excess oil. Serve immediately after dusting with powdered sugar and topping with the toppings of your choosing.

Best Funnel Cake Toppings

Choosing what to put on top of homemade funnel cakes might be the most challenging part of the process ;).

In accordance with custom, they are delivered to the table dusted liberally with powdered sugar. But there are so many interesting toppings that you may experiment with!

  • Fruit: Freshly sliced strawberries, pineapples, or a mixed berry selection!
  • Ice Cream: A heaping scoop of your go-to ice cream flavor, such as plain vanilla, mint chocolate chip, or another flavor of your choosing.
  • To serve, drizzle with your favorite sauce, such as chocolate, homemade Nutella, caramel, or even whipped cream!
  • Try cinnamon sugar, as you’d get on churros, or go for the more traditional rainbow sprinkles.

No matter which option you go with, you should be sure to consume them when they are still hot and fresh.

  1. Milk, egg, water, and vanilla extract should be whisked together in a large liquid measuring cup or batter bowl equipped with a spout.
  2. Whisk in the sugar, baking powder, and salt until everything is incorporated.
  3. After adding the flour, whisk the mixture until it is entirely smooth. Set aside.
  4. Over medium-high heat, bring an inch and a half of oil to 375 degrees Fahrenheit in a saucepan or pan with deep sides. It is done when you can put the end of a wooden spoon in the pot and see bubbles forming around the spoon. Turn the temperature down to medium.
  5. The batter should be drizzled from the cup in a thin line, then swirled around the pan and let overlap as desired. Cook one side for two minutes, or until it reaches a light golden brown color, then turn and cook the other side for two more minutes, or until it reaches a golden brown color.
  6. After it has been served, dust it with two tablespoons of powdered sugar. Repeat the process with the remaining batter one more time.
