Components & Alterations

RICE: Three cups of cooked white rice can be made from one cup of uncooked rice. The cooking time and liquid may need to be adjusted for brown rice, wild rice, basmati, or jasmine rice.

SEASONING: Rice absorbs the flavors of everything it is cooked with, and the recipe below uses our favorite rice seasoning! While Worcestershire gives a tremendous taste, a little soy sauce adds salt.

Try something new and add homemade Greek spice, lemon pepper seasoning, or fresh herbs just before serving! Try oregano, thyme, paprika, or garlic powder. For more taste and color, mix in finely diced veggies like celery, carrots, or bell pepper.

Also, don’t be scared to experiment with dressings and sauces!

Seasoned Rice

When the seasoning is heated into the grains rather than combined with them, seasoned rice tastes the best.

  1. Rice should be nicely browned after being cooked in a small amount of butter. Add the onion and garlic, and simmer until tender.
  2. Cover with the remaining ingredients and cook (per the recipe below).
  3. Remove from heat and give rice about 5 minutes to rest.

After the rice has finished cooking and cooling, fluff the grains slightly with a fork. To taste, add more salt and pepper to the dish.

Advice for Seasoning Rice Perfectly

  • Rice tastes better when it is lightly browned before cooking (and also helps keep the grains separated).
  • While the rice is cooking and cooling, keep the lid on to trap the steam (this helps it to cook and avoids it getting sticky).
  • The long-grain white rice recipe is provided below. Rice of a different variety will require a varied amount of time to cook, as will the liquid ratio. If you’re unsure, look for this information on the rice package.
  • When time is limited, double the amount and freeze half for a ready-to-eat side dish!
  • Retain leftover rice in the refrigerator or freezer in an airtight container.

  1. In a saucepan with a lid, combine rice and 1 tablespoon of butter. Rice should be heated until it begins to turn a light brown over medium-high heat.
  2. Cook the onion and garlic for two to three minutes, or until just softened.
  3. Stir in the remaining ingredients (but not the butter). Over medium-high heat, bring to a boil. Then, cover and lower the heat to a simmer.
  4. Cook for 20 minutes without lifting the lid.
  5. Without opening the cover, turn off the heat and give the food five minutes to rest.
  6. Remove the cover, then mix in the remaining butter. Use a fork to fluff, taste, and, if desired, add more salt and pepper.

Notes

One bouillon cube (of any flavor) can be added for a little stronger flavor.

Rice won’t steam correctly if the lid is opened to “peek.”

Add more fresh herbs, chopped bell pepper, or sautéed mushrooms if preferred.

Any type of rice can be prepared using spices; however, the liquid-to-rice ratio and cooking time may need to be changed.
