This simple tahini sauce will become a staple in your kitchen since it is creamy, nutty, and vibrant. Sprinkle it on salads, falafel, grain bowls, and more!
You already know that I adore tahini if you’ve been reading this blog for a while. I’ve uploaded tahini cookies, salad dressings, oatmeal, and even ice cream in the past, but today I’m sharing my go-to recipe for a 5-ingredient lemon tahini sauce.
This tahini is very adaptable and tastes great on salads, sandwiches, falafel, bowls, and more! I’ve included three delectable modifications in addition to my base recipe, which is comparable to what you’d find at any Middle Eastern falafel or shawarma restaurant.
I’m sorry, but I don’t have a favorite. They are all quite easy to make and have vibrant colors and strong flavors. Prepare one (or more) so you can spice up your meals all week long! They keep for up to a week in the fridge.
Tahini is a creamy, nutty paste formed from mashed sesame seeds if you’re not familiar with it. It is a vital component of Middle Eastern spreads like hummus and baba ganoush and is widely consumed there.
Nowadays, most well-stocked supermarket stores carry it. I use tahini in a variety of ways in my kitchen, but most commonly, I use it for this easy, flexible lemon tahini.
TYPICAL INGREDIENTS FOR TAHINI SAUCE
For this simple dish, you only need 5 common ingredients:
- Tahini – The star ingredient in this dish, tahini, should be of good quality and not overly bitter or stiff. My favorite brands have a great runny texture and nutty flavor, and they include Cedar’s, Soom, and Seed + Mill.
For the most vibrant flavor, squeeze your lemon juice. - Garlic – Rather than using minced garlic, I finely grate it to ensure that it completely melds into the sauce and adds a punch of garlic flavor.
- Water – Add water to thin your sauce as necessary until it has a smooth, creamy consistency.
Sea salt should be added to the sauce to bring out its nutty, lemony flavor.
Yum!
CREATING TAHINI SAUCE
Simply combine the tahini, lemon juice, garlic, salt, and water in a bowl and whisk until a luxurious, silky sauce is produced.
Tahini will initially harden up and resemble this when you add the water and lemon juice: Which is entirely typical.
The mixture will come together to produce a smooth, creamy sauce if you whisk it for another minute or so. Add more water as necessary to achieve the right viscosity if your tahini is dry or if you like a thinner sauce.
After that, taste it and tweak the seasoning. Add additional lemon for a brighter sauce if you like. Add 1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon of maple syrup or honey if it is too bitter. Additionally, add 1/2 to 1 teaspoon of olive oil to the dish if the flavor is too strong. Enjoy!
VARIATIONS IN TAHINI SAUCE RECIPES
I like to create this dressing in a variety of ways, just like my cilantro lime dressing. Even while the conventional recipe is great, these vibrant, tasty alternatives are a fun way to switch things up:
- Make this colorful, sunny sauce by combining 1/2 teaspoon turmeric, 1 teaspoon freshly grated ginger, 1 teaspoon olive oil, and 1 teaspoon maple syrup with the basic recipe.
- Beet Tahini – Tahini and beets go together like butter! To give the sauce a sweet, spicy flavor, mix a peeled and roasted beet with the base ingredients in a food processor along with 1/4 teaspoon each of ground cumin and coriander. As needed to thin, add water.
- Green Goddess Tahini: This super-green sauce is made in a food processor, just like the best version. I blend the ingredients for the foundation recipe with a heaping 3/4 cup fresh cilantro, a heaping 3/4 cup fresh parsley, 1/4 teaspoon ground cumin, 1 teaspoon maple syrup, and 1 teaspoon olive oil.
Please share any modifications you try!
SERVING IDEAS FOR TAHINI SAUCE
Tahini sauce is incredibly adaptable, and I use it in my kitchen in a variety of ways. I most frequently use it as a dip for pita bread or fresh vegetables, or I sprinkle it on my daily avocado toast. Here are a few additional uses that I like to recommend for it:
- with salad dressing. On green salads, roasted vegetable salads, pasta salads, grain salads, and other salads, I adore it.
- grilled or roasted vegetables. Roasted cauliflower, squash, or Brussels sprouts is my favorite combination.
- On wraps like falafel wraps or chickpea shawarma wraps, or sandwiches.
- on a grain dish. In this Buddha bowl, the turmeric and tahini dressing is my favorite.
