Wontons can be prepared in bulk and frozen in advance for a speedy and delicious meal in a matter of minutes.

The ideal starter or side dish for chicken lo mein, Asian noodles, or sweet and sour chicken and rice is a steaming bowl of wonton soup.

Wonton Soup: What is it?

A staple of Chinese cooking, wonton soup is made with filled wontons in seasoned chicken broth. When wontons are folded over a spicy meat mixture, they are an Asian version of ravioli or tortellini.

Because it has a terrific flavor and a meaty texture, the filling in this dish is made using ground pork. You could use shrimp, chicken, turkey, or even ground beef as a substitute for the meat.

Wonton wrappers are typically found in the produce section or close to the fresh chow mein noodles in most supermarkets. Ask the grocer whether they have them if you can’t find them; most supermarkets do.

Wonton wrappers are fresh egg noodle dough squares that may be easily pinched, folded, or cut into numerous forms for various purposes.

They are filled and boiled when making wonton soup, but they are also delicious and served crisp as little cups for jalapeno popper wonton cups or filled and fried when making crab rangoon.

How to Store

In the refrigerator, leftovers can last up to four days (the noodles may soften a bit but should still be great). Create the wontons in advance and freeze them for ease.

  • On a cookie sheet coated with parchment paper, arrange the filled wontons in a single layer.
  • Place in the freezer unprotected. Transfer frozen items to freezer bags.

No need to thaw the food first. Simply make the soup stock, then add the wontons. When the soup returns to simmering, start keeping track of the cooking time.
