Hugh and his current diet
NHS recommends an adult male to have around 2000 to 2500 calories per day. But for this role, his dietitian cum personal trainer has advised him to take 5500 calories of foods in a day. This is around 3000 calories more than recommended for his age. And Hugh revealed that all the food is measured before they serve it to him so that he eats the amount of calories needed. Hugh said:
“I don’t question anything,”
“Food arrives and it’s been counted out and it’s 600 grams of carbohydrates and it’s 270 grams of protein… and a certain amount of fat, I can’t remember the grams, and then I have to eat that food for the day.”
Is his wife, Deborra-Lee Furness in sympathy with him on this matter? Hugh says no:
“I can’t tell you how many times I’m like, ‘Oh babe, I’ve got to eat again’ and my wife is like ‘Shut up!'”
“Having me complain about eating? She’s like, ‘Oh poor you, oh you have to have another bite!'”
Hugh and his past experiences with this role
Hugh revealed that he absolutely had no idea about how things would shape when he first started playing this role. And that was two decades ago. He expressed:
“I knew nothing when I went into these films,”
“I just thought, pump up is two weeks.”
Further, he revealed:
“In fact, in X-Men one, if you look at it, I was cast three weeks before filming and all the scenes with my shirt off had to be pushed to the end… there is one shot, it was the first thing I shot, and the director was trying to hide my body!”
On an earlier interview, Hugh had said that Dwayne Johnson is his inspiration and also friend. Hugh diaclosed:
“He said, ‘Okay, you want to put on 25 pounds of lean muscle? You need six months. You need to eat 6,000 calories and here it is.’”
Hugh ate chicken breasts and large amounts of protein rich foods. And the results were remarkably good.
