One day, Tom Jones realized that it was difficult for him to fit into his suits. It was due to his weight gain. He decided to do something about it. A little lifestyle and diet change and it became possible for him to shed two stone: enough for him to be able to again wear his favorite suits.
Tom Jones and his weight loss journey
The judge of Voice UK and singer Tom Jones had put on a lot of weight. It dawned on him when he was unable to fit into his routine suits easily. He was determined to overcome the problem and shed some weight. And he made little changes in his diet and was able to manage it. He lost 2 stone and was happy.
Tom is 82 now and judging new talent on the ITV show The Voice since 2012. He has his share of health issues. Currently, he is due for his hip replacement surgery. There was also a rumor that before going on stage for one of his shows, he had collapsed. But his social media accounts rubbished these reports.
He has always been in shape but suddenly had some weight gain. He took to caveman diet to reduce the excess fat of two stone over a period of five months.
Tom and his caveman diet
Tom had disclosed about his diet on Radio 2 show at that time. The Delilah singer said:
“I was putting too much weight on. I didn’t think I was going to and I left the working out for a bit, thought I’d keep a check on it.”
“But with the Christmas puddings and cakes, before I knew it I was 230lb (16.4 stone) which was 30lb more than I should be. I couldn’t get into my suits. That’s when I thought: ‘This has got to stop’.”
He took help of a dietitian and said:
“Health is very important,”
“You’ve got to take care of yourself.”
Caveman diet is also called Paleo diet. In this, dieters consume lean meats, fish, fruits, vegetables, nuts and seeds. These are all foods that our ancestors used to eat as hunters and gatherers in the olden days. Tom said:
““Eat anything that’s natural – meat, fish, veg”
Tom and his hard drinking
To lose weight, Tom also cut down on alcohol. He used to have a bottle of wine at dinner previously. Tom revealed:
“The dietician asked: ‘how much do you drink?’ I told him I like a bottle of red wine with my dinner. To yourself?’ he said.”
“What I didn’t tell him was I’d started off with a martini, had a cognac and a bottle of champagne too.”
Alcohol has hidden calories that can add on to the daily calories from food and increase the weight. Now Tom looks fit and has assured his fans that he will continue to sing until the age of 100 years. In an interview, he said:
“”I’ll still be performing when I’m 100, if I can. When I was young, I used to say I’ll be doing it until I was 97, but it’s not that far away now.”
