MEAT This recipe calls for ground beef, but an Italian sausage is also a delicious option.

VEGGIES This dish’s key ingredients are onion, tomatoes, and potatoes, but you could also include shredded cabbage, carrot slices, zucchini, or frozen mixed vegetables! The potatoes should remain in all the modifications because they produce the thick bottom layer and absorb the broth.

RICE This casserole also includes uncooked white rice, but you may substitute whichever rice you have on hand.

Guidelines for Making the Ideal Hamburger Casserole!

  • To add flavor to each bite, sprinkle salt and pepper over each layer.
  • To change up the flavor, add spice combinations like Italian seasoning, Cajun seasoning, or taco seasoning.
  • Use raw beef because the juices will flavor the potatoes as they soak up the juices from the beef. I use 80/20 lean beef.
  • Make sure the dish is covered so that the steam can assist in cooking the rice and potatoes.
  • Fry the onions in a little butter to give them a mellower flavor (or use caramelized onions).
  • For the final 30 minutes, if desired, sprinkle cheese on top or between the layers.
  • The casserole made with hamburger and potatoes can be kept in the refrigerator for about 4 days.
