One of the all-time favorites in my family is baked french fries. Even more than store-bought fries, my kids like oven fries. Additionally, oven-baked fries are far healthier for them.

These fries from the oven go well with oven-fried chicken, jalapeno cheddar burgers, and chili cheese fries.

French fries baked in the oven

In general, russet Baked French Fries (Oven Fries) are the best for making French fries. Their skins are thicker and dryer than those of other potatoes, making them particularly appropriate for baked fries because they crisp up well in the oven.

Have you ever baked fries and found the outside to be too soft? Here are two excellent ideas to never encounter that issue again!

How to Cook Crispy French Fries in the Oven?

In the same way that deep-fried french fries are frequently double-fried (once at a lower temperature, then again at a higher temperature to crisp), I’ve discovered that oven fries benefit similarly.

You can cook crispy, delicious french fries in the oven!

  • After chopping the potatoes, soak them for at least 30 minutes in cold water. The French fry will be crispier as a result of this process, which removes a lot of starch (you can see it in the bowl after you remove them).
  • DRY: This is quite significant. Dry them thoroughly before baking to prevent steaming and softening. After giving them a spin in my salad spinner, I dab them with a dish towel.
  • SEASON WITH OIL AND PAMPER PAPER: Use parchment paper to prevent sticking and oil to make food crisp. Even though these are a form of healthy fries, you still need to use a lot of oil if you want them to crisp.
  • TWO TEMP COOKING: With this simple method, fries bake up deliciously crispy! Simply cook them for a little time at 375°F, then raise the heat to crisp them up.

How to Make Fries Out of Potatoes?

Because it adds a little bit more fiber and I prefer the taste and convenience of leaving the skin on, I always do. You can choose to peel the potatoes first if you’d like!

Using a French fry cutter will save you time compared to cutting fries by hand. To make equal fries, I use a cutter.

How to Cut a Steak Fry?

  • Usually, steak fries are thicker than regular fries. You’ll need to locate potatoes that are a little bit smaller if you want to produce baked steak fries. Cut the steak fries into thin wedges that range from 3/4″ to 1″ in thickness.
  • The same cooking procedure outlined below will be followed, but for a longer time.

French Fry Baking Techniques

I cook my homemade French fries at two temperatures for maximum crispiness:

  1. Make sure your oven is preheated to 375°F.
  2. After soaking, thoroughly dry the fries before seasoning.
  3. Season and generously oil the oven fries. On a baking sheet lined with parchment, spread evenly in one layer.
  4. 20 minutes to cook (25 for thicker fries).
  5. Increase the temperature to 425°F and continue baking for another 20 minutes or until crisp.

How Long to Bake Baked French Fries (Oven Fries) Fries: Keep in mind that thicker fries will take longer to bake, whereas fries that are too thin will just burn without becoming crisp.

Depending on how thickly you cut the French fries and, of course, your preferences, the baking time will vary. Although I want them super crispy, my family prefers them more tender-crisp.

How to Heat French Fries?

Your leftover oven-baked fries are simple to reheat on the stovetop or in the oven.

Reheating on the stovetop: Pour one or two tablespoons of oil onto a nonstick pan. Enjoy after a little period of reheating over medium heat!

Reheating in the Oven: You can reheat baked fries in the oven. On a cookie sheet lined with foil, arrange them in a single layer. Bake in a 400°F oven for 5 to 10 minutes.

Reheating in the microwave: Less optimal because they could turn out mushy or soggy! 20–40 seconds ought to be adequate.

How to Freeze French Fries Baked in the Oven?

You can also freeze any leftover oven-baked fries in a freezer bag for up to four months. Simply follow the directions above to reheat.

While frozen fries reheat beautifully, they also go fantastically in soups, stews, and casseroles!

What to Put With French Fries?

Instead of our preferred mashed potatoes or our favorite sandwiches and burgers, we adore fries with everything that comes with gravy! Our favorites are listed below:

  • Mushroom Salisbury Steak
  • Meatball Subs
  • Barbecue Ribs in the Oven
  • Slow Cooker Sloppy Joes
  • Dr. Pepper Crock Pot Pulled Pork
