This recipe, which is one of my all-time favorites, is super rich and delicious, elevating any dinner party, Thanksgiving, or Christmas meal.

Tossed in a cream sauce with a dash of parmesan and sherry for a genuinely restaurant-quality entrée, pearl onions are soft but still have a beautiful bite.

This recipe is quite tasty! These onions are the perfect addition to your holiday spread, with gently sweet and savory onions sautéed in a thick, buttery, creamy sauce.

While this recipe may appear unusual and unfamiliar, trust me when I say it will quickly become one of your favorites.

Fill a big pot halfway with salted water and bring to a boil with the onions. Reduce the heat to low and cook until the potatoes are soft.

Place the onions in an ice bath to cool.

Ingredients For Onions With Cream Sauce

  • 1 pound pearl onion root ends trimmed
  • 3 tablespoons butter
  • 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1 ½ cups light cream
  • 2 tablespoons dry sherry optional
  • 2 tablespoons parmesan
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • pinch ground black pepper to taste
  • 2 tablespoons fresh parsley chopped

  1. In a big pot, cover onions with salted water and bring to a boil. Reduce heat to medium-low and cook for 10 minutes, or until vegetables are soft.
  2. Drain the onions and place them in an ice bath with a slotted spoon.
  3. In a large skillet over medium heat, melt the butter. For about 5 minutes, cook and mix flour into melted butter. Salt and pepper to taste.
  4. Toss the flour mixture with the cream. Cook and stir for 5 minutes, or until thick and bubbly. In a mixing bowl, combine the cream sauce, onions, sherry (if using), parmesan, and parsley.
  5. Cook for 2 to 3 minutes, or until thoroughly heated. In a baking or serving dish, add the onions.

Notes

Use gluten-free all-purpose flour for this recipe.
