Make your pizzas with this simple red pizza sauce recipe! It takes approximately five minutes to put together with pantry staples and requires no cooking. It’s almost magical.
For your home-baked pizza, use this recipe to make classic Italian pizza sauce. Despite its speed of preparation, this sauce is rich and flavorful, which develops further throughout the pizza’s baking in a high-heat oven.
I prefer a sauce with a little of texture, and this sauce does that well. Many pizza sauces are either thick and bland or thin and bland. This isn’t the case.
Both the dough and the sauce come together quickly, allowing you to enjoy homemade pizza with the least amount of effort. Tonight, how about some pizza?
Ingredients in Pizza Sauce
To create this pizza sauce from scratch, you’ll only need a few ingredients:
Tomato Paste
Tomato paste has a strong tomato taste. It also helps to thicken the sauce. For this dish, we won’t use the entire can. I prefer to get tomato paste in glass jars so that I can easily store the remainder. Alternatively, transfer leftovers to a freezer bag, squeeze out the air and freeze tomato paste for later use.
Tomatoes, Crushed
Crushed tomatoes are ideal for making pizza sauce. Crushed tomatoes, unlike tomato purée, retain some texture. They are not as lumpy or watery as diced tomatoes.
Use plain or fire-roasted crushed tomatoes instead of those with additional seasonings like basil or chilis. I always buy Muir Glen canned tomatoes because you can tell the difference in quality.
Don’t have any crushed tomatoes on hand? No problem—just whiz some whole peeled or diced tomatoes in a food processor or blender until they resemble crushed tomatoes.
Olive Oil (Extra-Virgin)
Olive oil improves the sauce’s overall flavor and texture. It only takes a spoonful to get the job done.
Garlic, fresh
The flavor of tinned tomatoes is enhanced by the addition of fresh garlic. If you taste the sauce before using it, it will taste garlicky, but the flavor will soften as the pizza bakes.
Balsamic Vinegar
Although balsamic vinegar is an unusual component in pizza sauce, a small amount adds subtle richness.
Oregano, dried
The flavor of Italian pizza sauce is enhanced by dried oregano.
All of the flavors in this pizza sauce are enhanced by using fine salt.
Because we’re going to spread the sauce evenly on the pizza, I prefer it a touch salty. If you’re managing your sodium consumption (and/or choosing unsalted tomatoes), you can cut back.
Sucrose (Maybe)
The acidity of canned tomatoes varies. If the sauce is too acidic, a small amount of sugar can be added to balance it out (I like to use coconut or brown sugar). I don’t always need any sugar, depending on the batch. It’s best if the sauce isn’t too sweet.
How to Make Pizza Sauce?
The whole recipe may be seen below, but here’s the gist:
- To begin, combine the tomato paste and a splash of crushed tomatoes in a mixing bowl. This loosens up the tomato paste, making it easier to blend.
- Combine the remaining ingredients and stir well.
- If desired, add a little sugar to offset the acidity and adjust to taste. The sauce has been prepared.
