The pink sauce
The creator of the pink sauce is chef Pii. Pii is based in Miami. Recently she uploaded a post on her account in which she is seen dipping a fried chicken tender into the pink sauce. This was on 11 June 2022 and TikTok users were thrilled. It looks tempting though questions have been raised on the ways used to create, sell and distribute the sauce.
The sauce is fluorescent and has dragon fruit, with honey, sunflower seed oil and garlic and chili in it. The previous nutrition labels of this condiment had also mentioned thd pink Himalayan sea salt, and additionally less than 2% of lemon juice, citric acid and milk. It looks creamy but is more watery as compared to other sauces. Therefore, it slips onto the fingers of the consumer. He or she has to lick it off the fingers.
Controversies about the sauce
The ingredients are easy to procure. But what the users of the platform have noticed is the changing color and consistency of the sauce over time in the videos of Pii. It started with a dark magenta color and later took a lighter shade of it before becoming pink and then salmon color. The initial thick consistency turned to a watery consistency in the last video. Pii denied that there was any color change. She attributed the feeling to a change in lighting.
Moreover, the pink color seems to be from a dye and not from the dragon fruit. This implies that the sauce has a coloring additive that is missing from the label. These sauce bottles are now sold online. Earlier the ingredients were unknown but now the product shows them on the label.
The label states that the bottle has 444 servings and each serving gives 90 calories. There were spelling mistakes in the names of ingredients. For instance, vinegar was spelled as vinger. When questioned about approval from FDA by users, Pii first said that it is not a medical product. Later, she confessed that it is not approved. Now, the team is looking at the legal issues and trying to solve them. Moreover, the milk in the product can make the sauce rancid. It is not clear whether one needs to refrigerate it to avoid that.
