It is almost an undebatable fact that fast foods are not healthy for weight and health reasons. Hence we avoid those foods and consume them only occasionally. While we are cautious about the main food course ordering at these fast food chains, we often overlook about the caloric content and nutritive value of the associated sauce. Which is the worst fast food sauce? Nutritionist Lisa Richards shares her experience on it.
Fast foods and sauces
Fast foods are not complete without dressings, dips and sauces. The fast food outlets have a lot of options in this category.
Health experts and nutritionists have been warning people about the ill effects of fast foods on weight and health. These foods are very high in saturated fats, sugars and sodium. These can impact the blood vessels and heart and cause blockages and malfunctioning respectively. These lead to heart attack, stroke and early deaths.
Health-conscious and weight-conscious individuals are becoming aware of this. Hence they take fast foods only occasionally. Or they choose healthy options such as salads over cheeseburgers etc. But often they overlook the nutritional aspect and unhealthy content of the sauces that come with the fast foods. Which is the worst fast food sauce? Registered nutritionist Lisa Richards reveals on it.
The worst fast food sauce
Lisa states that the worst sauce to have is Chick-fil-A Sauce. This is an extremely delicious sauce. But it is unhealthy too. Because it has high calories, fats and salt in it. Thus, it is a high-calorie condiment. And one 2-tablespoon serving of the original Chick-fil-A sauce has about 140 calories and 1.5 grams of saturated fat. Lisa shares:
“This sauce contains high amounts of fat, at 13 grams per serving, due to it being made with soybean oil and egg yolks,”
“The sauce also contains 140 calories per serving and 270mg of sodium.”
Furthermore, there is added high sugar in this sauce. Lisa elaborates:
“The added sugar content of this sauce should also be a concern from high fructose corn syrup and sugar,”
It has 9 grams of sugar which is one-fourth of your daily recommended of 36 grams of sugar.
Healthy sauce options
At Chick-fil-A, there are other sauce options that are healthier. These include the Buffalo Sauce, the Barbeque Sauce, Honey Mustard Sauce, and the Polynesian Sauce. These sauces contain natural ingredients in them such as vinegar, spices, herbs and sugar. They have no artificial flavoring agents, preservatives, Monosodium glutamate or MSG, or trans-fats.
For instance, the Buffalo Sauce has just 5 calories and zero fats in it. While the Barbeque Sauce provides 70 calories and is sans fat. The Honey Mustard Sauce has 35 calories with 0 g of fat while the Polynesian Sauce gives 25 calories and 0 g of fat.
