“When my brother and I first moved to Jamaica from Alabama, we had thick Southern accents. Other kids picked on us, so I needed to have an outlet and to get strong.”

Biography

Childhood: Relocation to Jamaica

Born in Alabama in the American South, Torre was reared by a vegetarian household and showed no interest in physical fitness as a young child. He played football, but he didn’t maintain a healthy diet or way of life.

However, Torre and his brother relocated to Jamaica to spend some time with their grandparents. He was given jerk chicken and curry goat at this point, where he briefly started eating meat.

Becoming Vegan

Due to his southern American accent, Torre experienced bullying while living in Jamaica. He started working out in the gym because he wanted to get bigger and stronger as a result.

In 1998, when Torre was 23 years old, he decided to adopt a vegan diet and abstain from the consumption of animal products.

Even though many advised him that meat was crucial to his success in fitness, he started working out at the gym and gaining muscular mass.

Bodybuilding

Torre worked hard for the following ten years to develop his ideal figure, all the while abstaining from animal products.

He was inspired to participate in fitness competitions in 2008 after managing to create an amazing body. His friends then urged him to eat meat to fulfill his protein needs.

Torre, though, persisted in living a vegan diet. To demonstrate that vegan athletes could outperform any opponents, he set his eyes on winning a bodybuilding competition.

Inaugural Competition

Torre entered the 2008 SNBF Open Bodybuilding competition stage for the first time that year. Despite not having received any instruction on how to posture properly, he came in third, which is astounding.

But he was eager to bring home a prize.

Success

Torre returned to the SNBF show in 2009 after spending a year improving his physique. He won first place after making an impression on the judges with his shredded physique.

Over the following six years, Torre kept up his competition, participating in 15 events. He won three more shows, placing strongly in each of them, and added additional trophies to his collection.

Following his victory in the 2013 MuscleMania Universe competition, Torre received his Pro Card.

Online Iconic

By 2016, Torre had a sizable following all across the world. He was given the moniker “The Vegan Bodybuilder,” challenging popular perceptions of what a meat eater might do in the field.

Daily, he promotes the vegan diet by posting images and videos of his fitness journey and lifestyle.

Training

Torre works out in the gym as often as six times each week. He doesn’t have a particular exercise schedule, though.

Instead, the vegan bodybuilder merely works out the muscles he feels need attention that day.

““I hope it helps others who are considering a vegan bodybuilding lifestyle to see that they can still put on mass and build a great physique.”

Nutrition

Contrary to many other sportsmen and bodybuilders, Torre doesn’t monitor his protein consumption.

Simply put, he eats a balanced vegan diet, making sure to eat enough to satisfy his hunger and provide him the energy needed to exercise hard in the gym.

People want specifics, so they enquire about my intake of protein, minerals, and carbohydrates. However, I don’t record any of these.

The three main sources of protein for Torre are beans (including tempeh and tofu), lentils, and seitan.

Food menu

This is Torre’s diet strategy:

  • Breakfast – 1/2 block of extra firm Tofu scrambled, with spinach, peppers, 3/4 cup oatmeal, and banana.
  • Snack – Extra firm tofu scrambled with spinach and peppers, grapefruit, almond butter, and Ezekiel bread sandwich.
  • Lunch – Black bean chili with 1 can of black beans, 1/2 pack of seitan, vegetables, baked sweet potato, and 1/4 avocado.
  • Post-Workout – Apple, banana, and almond milk.
  • Dinner – Large spinach salad, 1/4 cup lentils, vegetables, brown rice, 1/2lb broccoli, or asparagus (all cooked in spices).
  • Snack – 2 tbsp almond butter on celery sticks.
  • Drink throughout the day – Tea, water, or seltzer.

“What inspires me the most is that I’m able to motivate thousands across the world to have the courage to pursue their dreams and give them courage!”

Influences and Idols

Torre Washington was younger, he admired imaginary superheroes like Wolverine. But as his passion for fitness grew, Arnold Schwarzenegger and other bodybuilders from the golden age served as his inspirations.

As “The Vegan Bodybuilder,” Torre has established himself as a fitness hero, motivating countless vegan athletes to pursue their goals.

“Learn what works for your own body. I want to create leaders, not followers. So I want to teach people to eat effectively for their own bodies.”

How Can Torre Washington Teach Us Something?

We can learn one lesson from Torre’s story: Never allow anything to get you down. He constantly heard that vegan athlete couldn’t compete with other bodybuilders, yet in 2013 he earned his Pro Card and disproved his critics.

Always uphold your principles and way of life. If you work hard enough and maintain discipline, anything is achievable.
