Empty calories foods are bad for health. They provide calories but no nutrients. We are aware of the common foods such as candies and chips that are in this category. But sometimes what we consider as healthy might not necessarily be so. There are two such unexpected empty calories snacks that not many people are aware of. But we need to know them and stop eating them. Which are these?
Two unexpected empty calories snacks
Many of us are aware by now about the snacks that we should avoid. Highly processed snacks that have high levels of saturated fats, sugars and salt in them provide the consumer with empty calories but no nutrients. Hence they are not good for health. They could lead to body inflammation, poor gut health, and chronic diseases. And they can cause calories surplus and weight gain and obesity.
As a consequence of this knowledge, most of us avoid chips and candies. But certain snacks that we think are healthy we continue to have. But do you know that there are two such unexpected empty calories snacks that are actually unhealthy? And hence, we should also avoid them.
Fruit gummies
Fruit tummies are supposedly made from real fruits. But the percentage of real fruits in them is minimal. Nutritionist and personal trainer, Mary-Ellen Sabat says:
“This means that much of the nutritional content of the fruit has been removed. Most gummy snacks also contain added sugar, which is why they are considered empty-calorie [snacks]. In addition, the gummies are often processed and contain added artificial flavors, colors, and preservatives, which also strip them of their nutritional value.”
Instead, she advises fresh fruits consumption.
She elaborates:
“The vitamins and minerals in fresh fruits can also help support healthy weight loss.”
Blueberries are a perfect substitute. They are high in antioxidants, dietary fiber and low in calories and carbs.
Whole grain crackers
There are several varieties of them. And the adjective whole grain makes us feel that it is healthy. But do not be fooled. It is not good for health. Many of these crackers such as the soda crackers and saltines are loaded with sodium. These could cause high blood pressure and cardiovascular diseases.
These crackers sound nutritious and have dietary fiber in them. But they are highly processed. This implies that they have unwanted additives in them which can do more harm than good. Some have added sugars and this could affect your weight loss plans. Mary suggests to avoid them. She explains:
“Whole grain crackers may be made with whole grain ingredients, but they are typically processed and high in calories due to added fat and sugar,”
“Many brands also contain unhealthy additives like salt and artificial flavors. Because of their high-calorie content and lack of essential nutrients, whole grain crackers can be considered empty-calorie food.”
Instead popcorn would be a healthier choice. Mary adds:
“Popcorn is a whole grain, low in calories and fat, and rich in fiber,”
“Eating popcorn can help satisfy cravings without adding extra calories and can help keep you feeling full longer.”

But avoid sprinkling too much of salt over them. This could retain water in body and cause weight gain. However, avoid excessive consumption of popcorns. Three cups of them provide 100 calories.
