Food and drink trends 2023

Last three years, people are tied to their homes due to covid pandemic and movement restrictions. That was the time that people could not visit public bars since the bars were locked. Hence many converted their homes into a small cocktail bar to entertain self, family and close relatives and friends. Many had time at hand to think about their food choices. And emphasis on food sustainability rose.

Now what are the likely food and drink trends that might happen in 2023? The giant supermarket of the UK, Waitrose and the famous online booking destination, Resy have certain predictions for foods and drinks for the next year.

Unrefined and homely foods

Prediction is that the next year will see most of us returning to our respective ancestral foods. The rising inflation and realization of eating healthily will be responsible for this shift. Processed foods and refined foods would take a backseat as people opt for organic and more meaningful foods. Increasing google searches for traditional recipes also confirm this.

Simplified menus

People would give up long winding food cooking and instead choose simple ways of cooking quality ingredients.

Sustainability

Waitrose survey showed that 36% of the shoppers are worried about climate change and its consequences. Therefore, people would opt for locally grown produce and thus become a locavore. This would be in order to reduce carbon foot print. They would think globally but eat locally. This would apply to meat, fruits, vegetables, and milk and milk products too.

Meat alternatives consumption would rise

People have realized the importance of plant based eating for self and environment. This trend of having more plant based foods would continue. And people would increase their intake of fake meats or meat substitutes such as those made from soybeans.

Coffee less coffee

After meatless meat, milkless milk, fishless fish, there would be a trend for coffee less coffee in 2023. Climate change would affect coffee plants immensely. Hence people are searching for alternatives. This would continue in 2023.

New tequila

This special tequila is matured like the regular tequila. But it is filtered further in order to remove the colors and strong woody flavors picked from the oak barrel. It would be clear, crisp and also sweeter compared to the normal one.

Solo dining

Gut health

Emphasis on gut health is rising. On TikTok, the hashtag #gut health has enormous number of views. Besides, prebiotics and probiotics, there would be an emerging demand for and production of postbiotics. As per Waitrose:

Very simply, prebiotics help feed the beneficial bacteria – called ‘probiotics’ – inside your gut. You can encourage this by eating more probiotic fibre. Probiotics then create certain compounds which help promote good physical and mental health. These compounds are called ‘ postbiotics’ and they work in tandem in pre and probiotics in helping support the immune system.’
