Childhood And Family

Kirstin Taylor Maldonado is an American citizen and a Taurus, as she was born on May 16, 1992, in Fort Worth, Texas. Kirstin is of Hispanic ancestry; her mother, Angelica Maldonado, is Spanish-Italian, and her father, Michael Cisneros, is Mexican.

They encouraged Kirstin to pursue her dream of being a musician because she had already shown a talent for singing at events and family gatherings when she was five years old.

The friends started singing at school functions as a trio. They entered the neighborhood radio competition because they believed they were a powerful enough band to compete, and even though they lost, they gained even more popularity at school.

Despite not having written any songs themselves, they were competent enough to cover numerous well-known songs. Kirstin had to leave the band to attend college, but she quickly realized she couldn’t live without the stage, so she quit college and joined Mitch and Scott again.


Scott learned about the third season auditions of the well-known NBC singing competition “The Sing-Off” at the start of 2011. Since Scott and Mitch were already booked for the show, he called Kirstin and insisted that she join them.

The aspiring singers formed the a cappella group Pentatonix and joined “The Sing-Off” show in September 2011 along with another 15 a cappella bands.

They were joined by Kevin Olusola, a beatboxer, and Avriel “Avi” Kaplan, a bassist (who were invited to join the band by Ben Bram, the group’s arranger and producer).

Pentatonix won the competition in December 2011, taking home a prize of $200,000 and signing a recording deal with Sony Music.

In high school, Scott Hoying, who was at the time a covert gay man, dated Kirstin Maldonado.
