“The greatest night in television history was that one. Okay!” Following a blow from Will Smith at the 2022 Oscars, Chris Rock said.
Yes, that did occur during the esteemed awards event on March 27, 2022, at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles.
Will Smith Punch Chris Rock for What Reason?
Everything began when Chris, a comedian, appeared on stage to deliver the Oscar for Best Documentary. He automatically started telling jokes as soon as he got to the large stage.
Later on, he seized the chance to crack what he believed to be a harmless joke when he noticed Will, who was nominated for Best Actor for his performance in King Richard, and the actor’s wife, Jada Pinkett Smith, sat in a position of honor.
He claimed that Jada, who is presently sporting a bald style due to the autoimmune disease alopecia, has the appearance of the lead actress Demi Moore from the 1997 action drama movie G.I. Jane.
Will initially chuckled at the joke, but he subsequently said he did not like it since it made fun of his wife for accepting her genetic disease. Therefore, he got up from his seat, moved over to where Chris was standing on the stage and gave him a vicious face slap.
Will yelled at Chris after slapping him in the face, “Keep my wife’s name out of your [expletive] mouth!”
The actor’s punch and the viral uncensored tape, which at first appeared to be a humorous sketch, astounded the Oscar crowd and viewers from all around the world.
“Tell me I didn’t just see what you just described. Please confirm for me that when @willsmith punched @chrisrock on national television, he was joking and that it was all part of the act. Please don’t tell me that @willsmith would do something like that, y’all.” Stephen A. Smith, a TV personality, tweeted.
Meredith O. Sullivan, Will’s publicist, was seen conversing with the actor in private during the commercial break as Denzel Washington and Tyler Perry pulled Will aside to make him more at ease.
The Pursuit of Happyness actor appeared to be wiping tears from his eyes in the uncut video that Scott Feinberg, The Hollywood Reporter’s awards columnist, published. He then sat down with his wife.
Will Smith Addressed the Slap During His Best Actor Award Acceptance
Just a few categories before the best actor winner was revealed, there was drama.
And to no one’s astonishment, Will became the fifth black actor to win the Best Actor Oscar for his work in King Richard and won the Academy Award for Best Actor.
Will portrayed the father of tennis players Venus and Serena Williams in the uplifting sports drama movie.
However, he first addressed the slap event in the video of his acceptance speech, stating, “Richard Williams was a staunch defender of his family.”
Later, he added, “To make amends to the Academy. All of my fellow nominees deserve my sincere apologies. I’m not sobbing because I won an award, but this is a great moment. For me, it’s not about getting a prize. It is about having the ability to illuminate everyone.”
After saying all of that, the actor joked about wanting to be invited back to the Oscars to end his speech in a lighter tone.
