Coronavirus pandemic caused bars and restaurants to down their shutters. The net result was people enjoying cocktails from the comfort of their homes.

Recently, spiced cocktails are gaining popularity. What exactly is a spiced cocktail? How is it different from the regular old and classic cocktails? Do the spicy cocktails have any health benefits?

During the coronavirus-induced lockdown, bars were also shut. Hence people began making and consuming their favorite cocktails at home.

At the same time, they were trying to boost their immunity to fight the deadly virus. Internet and social media was abuzz with names of various herbs and spices for it.

And soon, the trend of consuming spiced cocktails picked up. And now it has reached the extent that companies solely manufacturing such cocktails on a mass scale for sales mushroomed in different parts of the world.

These cocktails are increasingly used worldwide now. It is here to stay and would be the most favored drink of 2022.

The addition of spices and herbs to drinks have become so fashionable and trendy that spiced non-alcoholic drinks have also emerged and are being tried and liked by majority of the public. Summer is setting in and the market for these cocktails would rise.

Essentials of a spiced cocktail

The regular cocktails has the following three main ingredients: alcohol or spirit, sweet ingredient, and a sour ingredient.

The ratio of these in a perfect drink should be 2:1:1. The sweet ingredient and sour ingredient mask the bitterness of alcohol and make it fit for consumption. The sour ingredient also enhances the flavor.

The 10 must ingredients for a good cocktail are: two white spirits namely white rum and vodka, two dark liquors namely whisky and dark rum, syrup, lemon juice, orange juice, soda water, ice, and mint. Some also like to add gin, tequila, and/or pineapple juice in it.

In spicy cocktails, ginger, cinnamon, cumin powder, turmeric, rosemary, oregano, paprika, garlic, black pepper, coriander, cardamom, cayenne pepper and the like are added.

Health benefits of spicy cocktails

In the latest spiced cocktails, ginger is added for digestive and anti-inflammatory benefits. It also reduces nausea. One can add turmeric that is good for gut and has minerals.

It also possesses properties to act against inflammation. Rosemary is good for memory and concentration and the gut. Cinnamon helps with anti-inflammation and reduces risk of heart diseases.

It also lowers blood sugars. Oregano and paprika have loads of anti-oxidants in them and prevent cellular damage. Similarly, black pepper is good against inflammation in any part of the body.

In the West,  people rarely use spices in foods. Hence if they go inside the body via drinks it would be beneficial for health.

Sometimes, manufacturers and bartenders also employ Szechuan peppercorns, star anise, clove, cilantro, salt, thyme, and fennel seeds as an addition in these drinks.
