Irish soda bread is a substantial fast bread that goes well with any comforting meal.

This simple Irish Soda Bread uses a mix of white and wheat flour and doesn’t need much kneading or rising time. A few raisins or currants might be included if desired.

Ingredients & Origins

When baking soda was first brought to Ireland in the 1800s, Irish soda bread was created. Sour milk, wheat flour, and soda were ingredients that were frequently on hand to make this bread.

Soda bread was traditionally baked over an open hearth using iron pots or griddles. A cross is cut into the dough before it is made into a flattened round loaf. More background is available here.

Today, buttermilk is used in place of sour milk. If you don’t have any buttermilk on hand, you can still make your sour milk. One cup of milk and one tablespoon of lemon juice or white vinegar are combined. Before using, stir, then let stand for 5 minutes.

Irish bread is a quick bread that rises by using baking soda rather than yeast. There is no need to sit about and wait for the dough to rise for hours to make it. This bread smells delicious and cozy while it bakes in the oven.

  1. Ingredients for the dry recipe: Combine the dry ingredients in a bowl as directed.
  2. Wet components: Buttermilk and the egg are added gradually by stirring. Simply knead the bread until it is smooth.
  3. Shape & Bake: Form into a circle, score the middle with a 1/2-inch X and bake until golden.

The dough creates a rich, crusty loaf that is ideal for serving with Irish Lamb Stew or corned beef and cabbage and cutting into wedges. It tastes great and has the ideal texture for dipping in soups or even beef stew.

Alternatively, simply serve it with honey butter!

Storage and Remainings

For a day or two, this will stay well on the counter. Slice and freeze it if you want to keep it for a longer period.

  • When freezing a loaf, let it cool completely before putting it in an airtight bag or container and placing a date on it.
  • Slices left over can be frozen by individually wrapping them in plastic wrap and placing them in a zipped bag.

Remove from the freezer and let thaw on the counter until ready to serve.
