Because chow means “stir fry” and mein means “noodles,” the word “chow mein” refers to stir-fried noodles. In this recipe, soft noodles are combined with veggies and poultry that have been stir-fried before being combined with fried noodles.

This chow mein dish is simple to adapt by swapping the chicken for pork, beef, or tofu and rearranging the vegetables as you prefer!

How Are Chicken Chow Mein Made?

The majority of the time needed to prepare this quick chicken chow mein dish is spent cutting up the chow mein ingredients.

Before you start cooking, make sure everything is chopped and prepared because once you get started, everything cooks incredibly quickly.

  1. Noodles are prepared, drained, and set aside.
  2. Soy sauce, honey, rice wine, oyster sauce, and sesame oil are combined and then whisked together.
  3. Cook the chicken completely. Add the vegetables and heat them until crisp-tender. Cooking until the sauce has thickened, stir all the ingredients with the noodles and sauce.
  4. Add some sesame seeds and green onions, chopped. Serve right away.

Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoons canola oil
  • 2 cloves garlic minced
  • 1 pound boneless, skinless chicken breast cut into bite-sized pieces
  • ½ cup matchstick cut carrots
  • ½ cup chopped snow peas
  • 1 cup thinly sliced cabbage
  • 6 ounces chow mein noodles or other thin egg noodles like ramen, cooked according to package directions.
  • 1 cup chopped green onions
  • 2 tablespoons sesame seeds

  • ¼ cup low sodium soy sauce
  • 3 tablespoons honey
  • 2 tablespoons oyster sauce
  • 1 ½ tablespoon rice wine Chinese cooking wine (can substitute chicken stock for the wine)
  • ½ teaspoon sesame oil

  1. In a big skillet or stir-fry pan, heat the oil over high heat.
  2. Make sure not to burn the garlic as you add it to the oil and heat for 1 minute.
  3. Cook the chicken, tossing often, until almost fully done. (about 4–5 minutes)
  4. Place the vegetables in the pan’s center and push the chicken to the sides. the vegetables should be crisp and soft. (about 2 to 3 minutes).
  5. In the pan, combine all the ingredients by stirring. Noodles and Chow Mein Sauce should be added. Combine by tossing.
  6. Sesame seeds and green onions go on top. Serve right away.
