  • Meat: Use 80/20 lean ground beef or any other ground meat, such as ground turkey. I’ve even made sloppy joes with lentils before; even meat lovers are surprised at how good they are.
  • The sauce is a zesty, slightly sweet, and tart tomato-based sauce made with tomato sauce, ketchup, brown sugar for sweetness, and some cider vinegar for zing.
  • Optional Additions – Vegetables give food flavor and nutrients while also extending the life of the meat. Try shredded carrot, chopped celery, or other finely diced vegetables in addition to green pepper. For some heat, add some red pepper flakes.

Recipe for Sloppy Joes

Making this meal fast on the stove is simple.

  1. Meat: Over medium-high heat, brown the ground beef with the onion and garlic. Add bell pepper, if using, and drain any extra fat.
  2. Simmer in Sauce: Combine the ingredients for the sloppy joe sauce with the beef and simmer. Add salt and pepper to taste.

  • ½ onion finely diced
  • 2 cloves garlic minced

  • ½ cup water
  • ½ green bell pepper finely died
  • ½ cup tomato sauce
  • ¼ cup ketchup
  • 3 tablespoons tomato paste
  • 1 tablespoon cider vinegar
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon yellow mustard

  1. A big skillet is warmed up over medium-high heat. Add the onion, garlic, and ground beef while breaking it up with a wooden spoon. until no longer pink, cook. Remove any fat.
  2. Bring the sauce to a boil while stirring in the other ingredients. Lower the heat, cover the pot, and simmer for 15 minutes or until the sauce is thick.
  3. Heat the oven to broil while the sauce is boiling. Place the hamburger buns on a baking pan after brushing the insides with butter or oil. 1–3 minutes under the broiler, or until barely browned.
  4. Serve the meat mixture with the toasted buns.

Notes

It’s simple to duplicate or quadruple this sloppy joe recipe. In a crockpot, keep the stew heated until serving time.

Buy whole rolls to spruce up sloppy joes. Rolls can be filled with the sloppy joe mixture by making a cavity in each one with your finger rather than cutting them in half.

Cool fully before placing in a freezer bag to freeze. For up to three months, store frozen. Reheat on the stove or in the microwave after thawing in the refrigerator overnight.
