He was a Park City compliance officer who resided in Wichita, Kansas, with his wife and two kids. Along with leading a Boy Scout troop, he and his wife were active members of their neighborhood church. In addition, he appeared to be an entirely regular man with a wife, children, and even a Boy Scout unit. He was killing people in Wichita by sneaking out at night. Between 1974 and 1991, Rader killed 10 people, including several of his neighbors. Four members of the Otero family were murdered in Wichita, Kansas, on January 15, 1974.
The family’s eldest child, a 10th grader, was the one who found their remains. Rader confessed to killing the Otero family during his 2005 arrest. He also intended to murder others, including Anna Williams, who, at the age of 63, almost avoided death in 1979 by arriving home considerably later than anticipated.
Williams became his obsession, and Rader admitted during his confession that he was “extremely angry” when she avoided him. He waited at her house for hours before growing impatient and leaving when she didn’t come home after seeing friends.
On May 5, 1985, Marine Hedge, 53, was discovered in Wichita on East 53rd Street North between North Webb Road and North Greenwich Road. On April 27, 1985, Rader killed her and then carried her body to his church, the Christ Lutheran Church, where he served as the head of the church council. He took pictures of her body there as it was being held in various bonds. In preparation for the murder, Rader had earlier kept black plastic sheets and other supplies at the church. Rader later discarded the body in a secluded ditch. His strategy was dubbed “Project Cookie.”
After the 1988 slayings of three Fager family members in Wichita, someone purporting to be the BTK killer sent a letter, in which the author denied being responsible for the Fager killings. The author described the murderer’s work as “admirable.” The authorship of this letter by Rader was established only in 2005. Police do not believe that he committed this crime. Additionally, one of the women Rader stalked in the middle of the 1990s moved away, and two of the women he stalked in the 1980s got restraining orders against him.
