Proffee trend on TikTok

All of us love our morning cup of coffee. The caffeine boost is welcome for the post-sleep drowsiness. It gives us energy and elevates our mood. People love it hot or cold. Some even skip their breakfast and have only their coffee at that time. But by doing so, you are missing out on the nutrients of the day that your breakfast would have given you.

And now there is a new term trending on TikTok. It is proffee. And it means protein powder mixed with your morning cup of coffee.

This term and videos on it have over 46.1 million views in the popular social media platform. There are innumerable videos showing people mixing and enjoying protein shakes in their morning coffee cup.

One user of the social networking site (Proffee Queen KT) has put in claims that she drinks it daily and it is her go to drink in the morning hours. Moreover, she adds that she lost more than 100 lbs with it. Hard to believe!

This combo of coffee with protein overtly appears a good idea, but nutritionists warn against it. If losing weight or gaining muscle is your goal, the hidden sugars in the protein shakes might undermine it.

The warning from nutritionist

The head chef and nutritionist with Green Chef, Anna Tebbs has alerted people who are going for this new drink to think twice before doing so. She elaborated:

“Protein coffee may be a good way to increase your protein intake at the start of the day. Of course, like any new health trend it’s important to weigh up the pros and cons and to make sure that what you’re consuming is actually going to benefit you and your goals!”

And she continued:

“It’s also important to note that while it might seem like a great idea to be adding more protein to your diet you may not even need to up your intake unless you are following a low carb or keto diet.”

According to Anna, this drink is not for everyone. Then who will benefit and who will lose with it?

Benefits and cons

Anna explains that those who want to increase muscles and improve work performance will benefit with this trending drink. She said:

If you’re opting for a protein coffee before a workout the combination of protein and caffeine will give you a much-needed energy boost and help you stay focused during your workout.”

No doubt it is a convenient way to up your protein intake but a protein rich breakfast would be a better option. She warned:

“Be careful that the coffee you’re consuming isn’t packed with sneaky added sugars or this could outweigh the benefits of the protein you’re adding and do more to harm your goals than good.”

“Always do your research when it comes to your protein powder. Some variations are packed with fillers and additives!”

A hefty breakfast like Greek yoghurt can give you adequate protein. One can mix it with oats or in morning smoothie with fruits and vegetables. Or she said:

“Porridge on its own isn’t particularly protein rich but sprinkling over some almonds, chia or pumpkin seeds will remedy that and finish off your breakfast with some crunch.”

And smoked salmon and cream cheese roll are also a good choice.
