But it is quite an uphill task and can be difficult for many alcoholics who decide to give up the habit. Alcohol cravings occur. There are certain foods that can help lower these cravings.

Alcohol cravings and how to manage them

Often, humans fall prey to alcoholism. Reasons could be varied but once the alcoholic decides to give up the bad habit, it could be a hard task.

The person needs to observe good self-control. Medical and family support assists a lot in making things easier and simpler for the alcoholic.

Medicines are available that help the individual decrease the urge to have booze and over time to conquer it. The person needs to drink a lot of water and preoccupy himself or herself with other constructive activities.

This will minimize his concentration from alcohol. He or she can nurture and develop some hobbies for the leisure time.

There are also some foods that are claimed to aid in such alcohol cravings.

1. Good balanced and wholesome diet for alcohol cravings

The person wanting to overcome alcohol addiction should eat firstly a well-balanced diet containing complex carbohydrates, lean protein, good fat, vitamins, essential minerals, and fiber. Along with this, craving busting foods can be consumed.

2. Whole grains and bread made of it

Alcohol gets converted into sugar in the body. Hence to overcome these sugar cravings on withdrawal of alcohol, one should take complex carbohydrates such as whole grains and its various preparations.

But the bread should be without added sugars. Other alternatives in whole grains are brown rice, quinoa, oats, and barley.

3. Spinach and parsley in raw form

These green leaves have vitamins, minerals, and fiber. They also contain L-glutamine that decreases anxiety levels and thus overcomes withdrawal cravings. These should be consumed raw since cooking destroys the L-glutamine.

4. Peanut butter and Brazil nuts

These are good sources of proteins, fiber, and vitamin B. They have aminoacids for production of dopamine that is a happy hormone for the mind and elevates mood. Tofu, beans, and dairy products also are rich in proteins.

5. Salmon, tuna, mackerel

These fish have loads of proteins and vitamin D. These eliminate depression and enhance mood. Their omega 3 fatty acid content is also high.

6. Plain organic yoghurt

It has probiotic properties for gut health. It is also rich in vitamin D and calcium. These help mood elevation.

7. Bananas and sunflower seeds

Bananas and sunflower seeds have substances that increases dopamine and serotonin production in the body. These hormones are neurotransmitters that elevate mood and aid control over mind.

8. Walnuts, flax seeds, chia seeds

These nutritional seeds and nuts are good sources of proteins and omega 3 fatty acids. Their fiber and antioxidants contents are also high. All these help to eliminate cravings.
