  • For the ideal set-it and forget-it a meal, prepare these swiss steaks in the slow cooker.
  • These steaks cook low and slow to become fork soft, much like the beef in a stew dish.

MEAT: Round or cube steaks are traditionally where Swiss steak is found. Cooking these pieces slowly and gently makes them soft.

VEGETABLES: Include vegetables such as celery, carrots, onions, and peppers.

If you like, you can also use mushrooms, green beans, or fresh green peas.

SAUCE: To make a rich tomato gravy, tasty seasonings are combined with diced or crushed tomatoes and beef stock.

For a smoother sauce, add crushed tomatoes or chopped canned tomatoes. You can increase the tomato amount if you desire more sauce.

How to Make Swiss Steak in a Crockpot

  1. Put the vegetables and garlic in the slow cooker (per the full recipe below).

  1. In a slow cooker, place the sliced carrots, celery, onion, and garlic in the bottom.
  2. Salt and pepper steaks after using a meat tenderizer to pound them to a thickness of 1/4 inch (cube steaks do not need to be pounded). Each steak should be dusted in flour after being placed in a shallow dish or plate with the flour.
  3. Cook steaks in a skillet with hot oil over medium-high heat for 2 minutes on each side, adding additional oil as necessary.
  4. Add wine to the same pan and scrape any brown bits. Add the other ingredients—aside from the cornstarch—to the slow cooker.
  5. Steaks should be fork tender after 6 to 8 hours on low or 4-5 hours on high while covered and cooking.
  6. Serve over noodles or mashed potatoes.

Notes

Replace the chopped tomatoes with crushed tomatoes or even canned tomato soup for a smoother sauce.

An additional tomato can be added for more sauce.

Optional: Add 1 tablespoon cornstarch and 1 tablespoon water to the sauce to thicken it. On the stove, simmer the sauce while adding ingredients one at a time to thicken.
